Naming discussion

Sharing ideas for names might be a good idea. The ones I've come up so far aren't particularly good, but maybe they'll inspire someone else:
- Lumen (might be twisted into something more cool sounding)
- Vector Space (yay, how clever)
- x0r (nice and short, plus additional coolness for using a zero)

The one I have submitted as a backer is "Ether-Blitz".
Can have a cool flash logo as a separator, and "Blitz" although being a German word, is quite commonly understood in English and kinda "cool". It is commonly being associated with "Blitzkrieg".

I think it needs to be something easy to remember, not so generic and somehow related to the actual game. Having some sore of continuation from the old name also can't hurt.

Comments on the names fr1tz posted:
Lumen: hmm, sounds like nothing really
Vector Space: would be related to the game, but feels kind of generic and searching for it will probably come up with a lot of unrelated games
x0r: kinda cool, but also kind of non-descriptive.

I quite like "blitz", but using it at the end of the name sounds kinda cheesy to me, even though a name like "BitBlitz" would continue ROTC's habit of referencing computer terminology. Come to think of it, "Blitzkrieg" would actually be an appropriate name for the game, literally speaking. Too bad it has some negative connotations :)
How do you gauge the potential of using "krieg" in the name to cause offense? "Lichtkrieg", "Kriegslichter", "Lichtkämpfer"?
Too bad "Irrlicht" is already taken.
Another punny one: Wisper :)

What about simply "Lichter"? Translates simply into "Lights" and sounds pretty cool when pronounced in english.

"Geist" is popular outside german as well -> "Geistesblitz"? ;)

Can anyone think of a way to incorporate "Blitter" into a name? "Oblitterate"? ^^

I also like Bit-Blitz and it gives a cool acronym (BB) or maybe Byte-Blitz? Overall Ether-Blitz is still the coolest though :p

"Krieg" doesn't sound cool IMHO, and using a fully German term also seems not very easy for non German speakers to remember.

Yeah you're probably right about over-using foreign words.

To form a connection to ROTC the name could be taken from another Skaven track: "Corruptor", "Autonomus", "Second Reality", "Data Jack", "Ice Frontier".

Perhaps go with an -ous suffix:
- Luminous (full of light)
- Victorious (full of win)
- Vectorious (full of vectors) ;)

From the "rejected names for alux" list:
- Legions Of Light
- Ghost Commando (Ghost-Com)
- Spectral Spectres

More computer terminology:
- SIGILL
- Netcat
- Catnet
- NetBlit
- Shell
- HashFunk (okay, now I'm reaching ;))

Or maybe just simply "Ethereal"?

X-Cat: Apicalypse?

I kinda like Vectorious, but I don't think it's easy to memorise. I've grown up around dyslexic people, and let's just say that that name would not be very googleable. :P The other suggestions have been a bit less appetising. :(

As for words like 'Blitz' and 'War', I think they are too closely associated with strategy games and highly realistic wargames, which this is most certainly not trying to be. :P

Keep in mind the game must be unique. Give it a google and see what comes up. I was going to recommend something like "Bit Commando". but not only is that already taken -- it is also fits rather more with Alux than NOTC.

I like SIGIL though. Omit the last L and it becomes the word sigil. That said, it feels far too close to high fantasy (think Lord of the Rings) to comfortably name NOTC with. A variation of SIG is a possibility, though it may be too cryptic for anyone who isn't a Linux (or Unix) user.

Second Reality was a famous demo from back in the day.

Too bad virtually any combination with -tron is already in use. On the other hand a -tron name would probably make people expect a lightcycle game.

So far a lot of my suggestions emphasize the inside-the-computer aesthetic of the game (Vectorious, SIGILL, etc).
Maybe they should focus on a specific mechanic instead...

Form switching:
- Switch (the famous c statement)
- Digital Dimorphism
- Polygonal Polymorphism

Discs:
- Laserdisc
- Hard Disc
- Disco-O-Rama
- Veridis (as in Veridis Quo)

Altough emphasizing form-switching is probably better, as virtually any game type I can think of involves some form of it.

If we implement (actually I remember a video of it being implemented already?) a njan cat like ether form then definitely "Catnet". Steering the game into a less serious direction (e.g. make it more Team Fortress 2 like) wouldn't be such a bad idea... or lets say I wouldn't mind it and it would definitely bring more "for the lulz" attention ;)

In general I think we should keep the setting a bit more ambiguous, yes it is something digital or virtual, but what it is exactly should be less clear; because lets face it... this is not what it looks like inside a computer, and a virtual world can look anyway you want. Keeping it a bit more ambiguous gives you less artistic restrictions.

"Second reality" sounds way to much like "second life" by the way.

Hmm... we could also look for terms from Cyberpunk. Something like "Black Ice" or so. See here: http://orrange.tripod.com/glossary.html or here: http://www.metafuzion.com/index.php/Cyberpunk_Slang
Edit: "Deckjockeys"?
Edit2: "Ramjammers"?

Using cyberpunk jargon is a great idea, imho. "Black ICE" sounds cool. Could also be used with Ice Frontier -> ICE Frontier.

Some more non-cyberpunk suggestions:
- Context Switch
- TCS (Task Context Switch)
- ILL (or Ill) instead of SIGILL
- Concat

Regarding nyan cat: Just put nyan somewhere in your name and you get a nyan cat etherform (including rainbow trail)

That easter egg needs to stay in for sure :)

"Ramjammers" would make sense: "Ramjammer: A decker, more often a juggler, addicted to violent confrontations in the Matrix"

I like something that keeps the word disk/disc in the title since that is such an important part of the game.
I also think keeping ethernet from the old game would be a good idea
Ps I'me new to the game, I came from the indiegogo campaign.

Loving "Terminal Overload" (fr1tz's) and "Digital Damage" so far. "Digital <X>" is a good starting point, actually.
