Copyright status of the data files

Copyright status of the data files

Postby Wuzzy » 08 Sep 2014, 17:28

Not long ago a lot of the textures were replaced.

Hey, just some quick questions:

Are all data files are clear of copyright issues? (meaning that there are no harsh copyright restrictions like no copy, no derivates, no commercial use)? If not, under what license do they fall? And which files are the problematic ones (if any)?

If that’s true then Stunt Rally could theoretically be included into distributions like Debian (for example).

Terrain textures are under CC0 (by Nobiax). Sky textures are from 0ptikz (no selling).
Vehicles are usually under CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA, but some of them count as fan art (although no logos or brand names are present), which may restrict commercial use.

Most sounds are from Freesound.

Ah, I think we already discussed that on IRC.
You can check all .txt files in data/ subdirs.
But shortly put, I assume all VDrift stuff is (at most) GPL v3 (hope so, not sure about engine sounds).
We have a special clause in license of skies (not meant to be sold) - IMO no other ones are there (so good).
So far I know no new sounds or objects are with -NC, so all should be good. Cars don't have any logos etc.
Few old road textures are based on a VDrift asphalt texture, rest is based on CC BY.

But yeah this is/could be possibly/still a problematic topic.
In any case, I don't see that 'included into distributions' thing a a reason to throw out any good and decent data (like skies, engine sounds) or a great goal or sth. If we're in okay, if not, whatever, playdeb works, GNU/Linux binaries mostly too, many of packages already done for distribs.

OK, so the only problematic files are skies. Non-commercial is a nasty restriction.

I am not suggesting to delete anything, I am not crazy. It is not really of high priority but if good replacements pop up someday I think that would be a good opportunity to replace the sky files. But until then, I think there are probably 1000 more important things to do. xD
