Can I configure SR to be more arcade racing?

Hi,

I was very impressed by the amount and quality of tracks offered by SR but I got scared by how bad my driving was. It felt more like sliding on ice than anything else.

Is it possible to change car parameters or ground parameters so that the game is more of an arcade game (super simple stupid driving like need for speed)? And if yes, which and how?

Please dont try to convince me that SR is good as it is. It might be good for you and I respect that you have much more skill than I do but for me it is just the wrong game if it can't be made more arcade (more easy to drive). Bugreports like http://code.google.com/p/vdrift-ogre/issues/detail?id=176 convince me that the game is supposed to be like that, so no need to argue about this.

If the engine doesnt allow this, is there an open source game with similar cool tracks that is more arcade?

cheers, josch

I'm undergoing a big change in all simulation parameters now. Will be less sliding in next version 1.9. But still gravel.
As for me, I'm going in opposite direction, I like difficult games and simulations.
But, it is possible. Just takes a lot of time to edit tires, surface parameters, car params (to make them feel nice, fun, playable, and fit).
Next ver (1.9) also will have car editing in game (already done and tires too), maybe even some basic car setup eg. steering range, suspension height etc.
Surely, we can have then, a 2nd mode - arcade simulation. But like I said, will take some time to tweak all params, since this is a simulation and it has lots of them.

If you want arcade racing, I suggest Speed Dreams.

If you want something more sandbox-like with crashes, deformed cars etc, you want Rigs of Rods.

If you want a rally racing game with mad stunts, then you want? Stunt Rally of course! :D

If you want more arcade tracks in Stunt Rally (i.e. more grippy surfaces; tarmac) then you would have to make them, currently.

While I've somewhat gotten used to the driving model, I too would like it to be easier. I once got rather nice improvement simply by increasing mass/inertia in the code, but it broke e.g. fluids. However, now the development is going to the right direction and git master branch contains quite a few changes. I think once 1.9 is released and if there is still desire for "easy mode", something could be hacked together by modifying certain properties from code, without creating a second set of all car, tire and surface parameters. It would probably break some tracks, but make others enjoyable for a casual racer.

Do you think 1.9 will be released before christmas? Otherwise I'd like to know where to edit variables (and which) to experiment myself.

The only thing I found online was http://wiki.vdrift.net/index.php?title=Car_parameters_for_vdrift-2009-06-15_and_older

No idea, it's possible, but I'll release when I'm ready and satisfied with my results.
Arcade mode is no prority for me.
Yes, that wiki would be the closest to what's in SR 1.8, which already changed.
I hope you don't think that changing a few values will suddenly make the game a complete simple, arcade and fun to play :| especially while you can't drive it (don't understand car simulation), sorry to put it like this.

Nothing to be sorry about - a fact cannot be an insult :)

I will see if I can manage to modify some things mentioned in that wiki page to achieve what I want and will otherwise checkout SR some time later. :)

Okay, it will be in january or something, but I will make 2 simulation modes: easy and realistic.
I have some feeling now what to change for the easy mode.
Still developing realistic sim atm. I fear it will be more complicated, so that's why I also want to make a 2nd easy version.

cool, probably a great way to have more mass-appeal for this game and build a community (right now these forums are awfully quiet).

I tested the easy mode from git master a bit yesterday (it's mostly implemented already!). It sure is easier to stay on track and will probably be my weapon of choice from now on.

You Could try SuperTuxKart (supertuxkart.sourceforge.net).
It is Very easy to drive in, But Advanced mode is pretty hard.
Very good game. Try it out!
(Note: I am NOT a developer.)

What timescale do you have for a release with the easy mode? (I'd like to try it out but don't have time to work with git/compiling.)

I want to release in 2 weeks (up to 4).
I'm mostly done. But I could always have some more testers.
