@NaN, BiohazardX:
I'll add support for translatable map location names shortly and will update the pot file alongside.

What ? :?
Will you update the file with new strings?

Between I've already started to translate the file you gave me in this topic (valyriatear.po), even if I'm still at the beginning of the work.

@BiohazardX I am running my po file through poedit(http://www.poedit.net/). It makes updating *.po files from *.pot very simple (and will generate a mo for testing).

Hi.

Just upload here my work, even if it's not still completed at 100% :D

And I found an error on an original string: (number 278):

New Skill Learned:\n

this string gives an error because you should remove the "\n" from the text.

Hi BiohazardX,

And thanks for the translation! I'll add the 'Italiano' language asap along with the german update.

this string gives an error because you should remove the "\n" from the text.

That's weird, it doesn't on my side and IIRC, the \n is actually needed.

Could you make sure to add it in your translated sentence as well? Like:

Nuova abilità apprese:\n

An see if it get rid of the error?

It gives me the following error in Poedit, if I'll add the "\n" at the end:

Error: 'msgid' and 'msgstr' entries do not both end with ''\n'
C:\Programmes\PoEdit\bin\msgfmt.exe: found 1 fatal error

It gives me the following error in Poedit, if I'll add the "\n" at the end:

weird, I opened the it.po file you gave here and I don't have this error.
(I have another one telling me I should set up the language ect in the file properties)

Can you post the file that gives you the error?

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Hi BiohazardX,

Ok, I've seen the error.

Here is how to fix it:

You might have noticed that after (in the line under) the \n in the original sentence there are four spaces.

Those spaces aren't present in your translation. You'll need to add them to fix the error.

Thanks Bertram for your advice, now it works (didn't realise those four spaces  )

Ok, so I'll continue with my work!

Re: Translation

Ok, I've almost finished to translate the game in Italian, and I'll update my last version these days but first I've to correct some mistakes and improve some things.

But I've also have some questions to ask, because I haven't test the game yet (don't know how to compile the SVN, I prefer to wait for the first game version) and I'm not sure how to translate these words in the right way.

So here are my doubts:

1) Karlate: is the name of a people? Or is it a country?

2) Prep time: stands for "preparation time" ?

3) Butterfly hair tong: weird item. Is it an hair clips for women?

4) Orlinn: is it male or female? (I guess male, but don't sure)

5) Volt: is it an electric attack? With lightnings?

6) I find this sentence:

I would be entrustfully obliged to you!

"Entrustfully" don't exist as word. Maybe did you mean "trustfully" ?

Thanks.

1) Karlate: is the name of a people? Or is it a country?
A trace from Allacrost. That one should be removed from Valyria Tear, but will be kept in Allacrost I guess.
Don't bother translating the corresponding sentence for now. It must be unused.

2) Prep time: stands for "preparation time" ?
Yep

3) Butterfly hair tong: weird item. Is it an hair clips for women?
Yep

4) Orlinn: is it male or female? (I guess male, but don't sure)
It's a boy, Kalya young brother. but now you tell it I'm not sure it is told within the game, eh. :)

5) Volt: is it an electric attack? With lightnings?
That's it.

"Entrustfully" don't exist as word. Maybe did you mean "trustfully" ?
I used some kind of neologism as the npc Georges who is a *poet* is trying to make som show when he speaks.
It's a mix between entrusted and trustfully.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Thanks Bertram.

I finished my work for now, but I want to remember that I leave some fuzzy strings because first I need to check them in game. I'll also looking for future updates, since this game is not yet completed.

So here's my work, please commit to the SVN epository :) :

Translators: what information do you think would be useful for yourselves and for new translators that come along to go up on the wiki? The old Allacrost wiki has a single information page for translators (here: http://allacrost.sourceforge.net/wiki/i ... anslations). It's incomplete and kind of messy, so I welcome your input in answering the following questions:

  • What sort of information do you want to see as a translator?
  • How should this information be organized? For example, how many different wiki pages should there be containing translation information?
  • What content on the old page should be removed, if any? (Ie, should the information for developers be moved to another page since translators won't need to worry about that information?)

Once we have an idea of what we need and how the information should be presented, I invite you all to come over and help on the new Allacrost wiki to help me document this information. This wiki will serve both Allacrost and VT's needs. The goal is to make your lives as easy as possible, as well as making it very straight forward for new translators to come along and immediately begin writing translations for their own language.

The new Allacrost wiki is here: http://www.allacrost.org/wiki

Thanks!

Hi,

As a little translator myself, what I'd like to see is what to install and what file to edit or to create to be able to translate.
- A link to poedit.com with small steps to open or recreate/update a po file from the pot file.

- A little more advanced thing would be how to use the translation right away in game.

- Certain words or expression typically from the game, good example: Karlate should be listed
with their proper translation according to the language you're translating in,
along with other notes, like that Orlinn is a boy in VT, for instance, as it seemed unclear.

- Ah, and a troubleshooting section, speaking of, for instance, when I've got this error on
poedit, what do I do?

That's for the manual part of it. Maybe you'll also want to use certain services such as transifex.com

Side-note: VT/Allacrost will both need more and more urgently contextual translations, and plural support.
And I still don't have a clear vision on how to add code-wise c-format strings translation support.

Best regards,

Here is the translation guide in it's current state: http://www.allacrost.org/wiki/index.php ... ator_Guide

This was copied over from the old wiki. I haven't taken much of a look at it, so feel free to edit it as needed. We may want to consider splitting this information up into multiple pages as well, but for now lets just put all our translator info on this single page.

Thanks fior the link:

The page is pretty well done already.

Here are the few first changes I'd bring if you agree:
Which tools will I need to have?
You will need a simple text editor. Or, if you want to get fancy, there are PO file editing tools out there (you will be editing a .po file). PoEdit is an example of such a tool

I'd add a note about the fact that "simple" editors might break the encoding, so the use of poedit should be encouraged.

Location on Linux: txt/$lang/LC_MESSAGES/allacrost.mo
Location on OS X: Allacrost.app/Contents/Resources/translations/$lang/LC_MESSAGES/allacrost.mo
Location on Windows: txt/$lang/LC_MESSAGES/allacrost.mo

In VT, I've changed txt/ by po/ since it was more self-explanatory for me. Can we keep that?

cout << Translate("My name is Claudius.") << endl;

I'll change this to reflect the end of using namespace std; use, I mean:
std::cout << Translate("My name is Claudius.") << std::endl;

EDIT: Nevermind, I saw you wanted to keep that practice.

And finally, there is the general note about svn / autotools not used in VT. What are your plans according autotools, will you switch to cmake or do you prefer
to stay on autotools?
More delicate point, I guess you're going to stay with svn with your fresh low experience with git, or maybe you want to give it a bit more time?

EDIT: Nvermind bis, since I saw you'll keep svn and autotools.

Hi Nan,

Thanks for the update and for reporting the bug.

The translation is there and the bug is fixed. (Even if I shall try to fix it in a better way later.)

I've watched the end in German ;) and as I saw a textbox being badly wrapped when winning battles in German (the one saying 'Items found' -> 'Gegenstände gefunden')
I fixed that also along the way.

Happy New Year :)

How are you fixing these bugs, by the way? Making the text areas larger so that the translations will fit properly? Or are you doing something with the GUI code?

Ah, the 'Items found' translation might also be shortened to 'Gegenstände'.

There is another one that could use some width adjustment:

I've got a related but maybe somewhat controversial proposal regarding battle commands menu. Currently the command options are listed in a row. How do you think about placing them in a column?
Attack
Defend
Support
Item

It would make the interface more consistent and make space for the translation. It would require changes to the icons though, downscaling or maybe even removing them?

Have a look at the commit log and you'll get the answer.

Hi,
Sorry, it is out of the question. Could you use abbreviations instead?
