Importing new weapon models?

Postby Four30Six » 02 May 2012, 00:12

Hello everyone,

So glad to finally be part of this community. I came from Sauerbraten and recently realized the great potential Red Eclipse has. It's an outstanding game that I thoroughly enjoy. I have been gathering models for weapons to test the procedure, but for some reason I can't get them to appear in game. Perhaps I am writing the .md5 text files incorrectly. Or perhaps the poly count is too high? At this point, I would be glad to get more than floating hands in a supination pose (like holding a weapon without the gun). I have looked around online but I haven't been able to find a definitive tutorial on how to actually get models in game. I don't have a lot of experience modding this engine, and any help would be greatly appreciated! If anyone has a link to a good tutorials I somehow missed that would be wonderful. Thanks in advance!

See you online!

Your best bet is to review the config files for the existing weapons (in ./data/models/weapons/) to see how they are set up. Red Eclipse has different setup to most games, and has far more animations than Sauerbraten. If you continue to have issues, all I can really suggest is that you post your config here and see if one of us can help you debug the problems.

I humbly ask that if you do have luck with importing custom models to Red Eclipse, PLEASE post as much as you can about what you had to do, and how you had to do it here. Wazubaba is fairly decent with 3D modelling, and I'm sure he would love to know how to get stuff in. Not just him, but anyone else with modelling talent would probably find this information extremely valuable, as I'm sure SOMEONE wants to make some nice alternate weapon models. (personally, I'm still waiting for LuckyStrike's new shotgun model)

you could check out the tutorial I posted on Quadropolis - I detailed the entire process from start to finish for .smd guns, and I also included some example config files.
