Overdrive-re.. and other Quadropolis maps?

Overdrive-re.. and other Quadropolis maps?

Postby greaserpirate » 18 Jul 2012, 20:08

I was just wondering.. there's plenty of maps on Quadropolis that we might be able to use in Red Eclipse such as Fury, Alithia, Collusion, and Portville. All we would need to do is get permission and change some textures in the .cfg file for one included with Red Eclipse. Red Eclipse already has some really good maps (like cutec, stone, and industrial_ctf), but there are tons of absolutely spectacular maps on Quadropolis that Sauer hasn't taken. (even the ones it has might not necessarily be off the table, right?)

To illustrate this, I've converted a map I made about a year ago called "Overdrive" to be playable on Red Eclipse without having to download Sauer, or anything else but the map. It's playable on CTF, DTF, and Bomber Ball. I give you permission to do anything you want with this map, including use it on your server, as long as you don't try to claim ownership of it.

That is an interesting thought. Your map looks really nice from the pic and I'll try it in some minutes. Implementing many new maps in the original game could force the developers to redefine the map-voting-menue, to make it easier to vote quikly. Another point is, that the mappers should agree, to use their maps and retexture them. Maybe they have to do it theirselves ? Your thought is pretty cool and I thought also this way in the past, but there are some questions that have to be answered.

I agree that you need permission of the original author of the map to take / copy it. It takes so much time to create a map that it really becomes your baby :) Will try it out too one of these days and let you know what I think.

greaserpirate,
Please add a license file, overdrive-re.txt, with your map archive that reads exactly or similar to the below.

I agree that there are some good maps out there for Saurbraten. I've played some in Red Eclipse and had a good deal of fun with them. Some of the maps might even accidentally be good for parkour. A few layout changes to ensure good play with the Red Eclipse mechanics, along with the retexturing you are talking about and we could have several solid new maps for inclusion in the game. Thanks for changing your map for Red Eclipse. I'll take a look at your conversion when I finish this post.
I'm back after playing on your map a while. I played a game of basket bomberball and added 8 more bots. That worked well. Then I tried a game of multi basket bomber ball, which defaulted to hold bomberball for lack of 2 more goals. I upped the the bots to 11. I got no lower than 22fps on my nettop. I think that's decent performance and I had fun on it. I also liked your sign about the cyanide pill. I will have to steal your 1-way wall method for a map I might eventually finish.
Cheers

Thanks for the advice, Dratz-_C. I've updated the map to have bases and playerspawns for Multi, 12 bots as a deafault instead of 4, and I also added another base on top of the central generator (below where the rocket is). I also made the .txt file like you suggested. Feel free to use whatever you want from this map in your own creations.

So far it sounds like we should contact some of the map creators for maps the community agrees we should have. I'm thinking someone with authority, like one of the devs or even Quin if he's not too busy, should contact them; there should be contact info on Quadropolis.

so which maps do you think we should ask for?

greaserpirate,
You're welcome. Thanks for adding the license file and responding to my playing experience. I will get overdrive-re again and test it. I will also look at the 4 other maps you mention. Perhaps after that I could look on Quadropolis but it might be later this weekend.
I just tested the new overdrive-re and it seems the same as before on multi basket bomber ball--it defaults to 4 bots and there is no base under the rocket. Are you sure you attached the right version?
Now I looked at the four maps you mentioned. Fury looks hard to parkour on but this could be changed. Lithia I'm not sure about due to some contention in the comments and I wish in vain that we could get rid of the face. I like Collusion the best unless it produces a low framerate. Portville is out because of a low framerate. Those are just my initial thoughts. I haven't played the maps yet. I may have to download the svn copy of Sauerbraten to do so.
Cheers

Really sorry about that... I have no clue what happened, but this time I fixed it, and I double-checked to make sure if it worked. (it did.) Thanks for telling me about that, would've been really embarrasing.

There's no mechanism for importing Xonotic maps into RE that I know of, so they would have to be made from scratch. I've heard they have some pretty cool maps that we could take some inspiration from, but we'd have to do a lot of work to port them to RE (as opposed to just downloading from Quadropolis, and changing a few details.

greaserpirate,
The multi baskets increase the pace and the bomberball below the rocket forces players and bots to the top. Thanks again for those changes. I have one last recommendation. All of the ways in which one may die in this map produce the same death message of playername died. Would you consider making the death messages match the manner of death? For example, "Dratz-_C jumped into the superheated reactor coolant," "Dratz-_C perished in the oxygen flare" and "Dratz-_C was neutralized in a foam of cyanide" and so on.
Cheers
