Alternate Masterserver

Alternate Masterserver

Postby freezurbern » 30 Dec 2013, 06:17

So today the masterserver went offline (in fact i think all of icculus.org did) and was wondering, what could we do in case something like this happens for an extended period? For example, if it gets DDoS'd like Sauerbraten's masterserver?

Also, when connecting to a server with auto-identify on, it kept kicking me off. I feel that it would be better to alert the user that their auth request failed because the masterserver couldnt be reached.

Under normal circumstances, the cache each client has suffices for short term outages, as the server list doesn't change that dramatically over such a short period of time. I do have plans in the future for a distributed master server mechanism using trusted servers and a DNS round robin, but that is still on the todo list. I believe that being kicked off has been fixed since 1.4, but servers running the older code will exhibit this behaviour still; at least, as far as I can see, the code in SVN should allow the connections regardless.
