What was the first version of RE you played?

Postby TheLastProject » 19 Mar 2013, 00:06

With 1.4 just around the corner, I was wondering when you joined Red Eclipse. What was the first version you played?

For me, that would be 1.1. The reason I know is because I can recognize some 1.2 features as feeling "new and exciting", and from finding back a few bug reports I did before the release of 1.2.

So, when did you start playing? Are you so old that you long for the good old days of revision 766, or are you just starting with 1.3.1 / 1.4?

(1.4 has already been added to the poll so it won't be outdated in a few days, not because I expect people to actually start with 1.4 just yet)
Hats, Afros, wings and raptor feet. This game is showing progress indeed.

RE 1.2 myself. It was literally a week or two before 1.3 came out though, so not sure if it counts.

Technically it would be early SVN actually. :P The first revision was yours (riiight?), so there.
You just wasted 3 seconds of your life reading this.

1.0 was the version I played first.

I still remember the BF days, then read about BF RIP and the new fork RE. I've been watching YT videos since then of the development and when 1.0 came out I was just as happy as a kid who gets a new bike :')

I came with v1.1 and I don't know the good old bloodfrontier days. I played similar games like the Quake or the Unreal series in the past. RE was more my kind of gameplay, more than neuxis/xonotic or warsow. Also I've never enjoyed to play instagib like in RE (never played it in other games, I found it boring). But the editor was the main thing, which really convinced me.
This is also meant as a compliment to the creator/s of Red Eclipse and everything around it.

:::edit:::
Ah and I remember the huge step, which the old map dutility made to the actual one. A great improvement :), which shows up also in the amount of gameplays on it today.

I played BF on and off, and if I recall correctly, I got involved proper in the middle of the forking into Red Eclipse, and was a bit confused over all the commotion at first :)
I've got a few failed attempts at creating new textures from photos dated 2010-06-04, which is just a day after the RE repo was created.

Looking at my old archive, it seems I started doing Ubuntu package builds at 0.90+svn224 as well.

I started playing after the release of BF Alpha 1. I created my first map for BF right before the fork. I then switched to the RE SVN and continued playing up to this point.

It was 1.2. Before i played urban terror and liked very much the Sr8 sniper rifle because of its instakilling properties (the hit sound is beautifull):P After clan i was in became mostly inactive i found RE's instagib.

I started with 1.2, that was maybe a few months before 1.3 came out.

Looking back at some early 0.9 version where most (all?!) of the actor and weapon models were missing and hitboxes were just rendered as large colored blocks, it is amazing to see how much progress was made with this project. Truly amazing.

I joined during the Ides release. I was browsing for open source games (at the time I had just gotten into open source) to play and happened entirely by chance to stumble upon Red Eclipse in a random blog post celebrating the Ides release (don't ask for a link because my memory isn't that good :P). But yeah, I've been playing and involved in the community ever since the big one-oh. It was around 1.1 - 1.2 that I really got heavy into the community and trying my best to contribute in any way I could. I mostly just posted on the forums a lot :P

Red Eclipse came with a magazine? Which one, exactly? I'm sure we'd all like to know (as I haven't heard of this).

Some Polish magazine put Red Eclipse 1.2 on a CD/DVD.

Sorry to revive an ancient thread, but thought this was a fun topic. Tack me into the "old fogie" group. Here's what prompted me to jump on-board, even found the article: http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/02/2 ... y-Released

Quin's been stuck with my nonsense ever since. ; )

And goes to show the importance of publicity. Would be interesting to see statistics of what prompted others to join (promotions, reviews, friends, etc.), in addition to when.

One of the questions on the account application is actually that, so I get a sampling from those who apply for accounts. The form chucks it all in a nice neat spreadsheet on Google Drive for me too.

It's a nice compliment for RE that I started playing and actively following it because it was one of the most fun and free FPS games on Linux in times of BF Beta 2 and there were little other good Linux titles, but up until now it's still the only game that I play online regularly even though I have over 100 Linux games in my Steam library. In other games I'm interested in single player campaigns, but it's the addictive gameplay of RE that's luring me into online play :)
