Can you just make a completely new map from scratch and record all to the video?

Now that you mention editing, one thing that always distracted me from the editor was the missing ability to 'move' blocks in the editor. I don't mean the selection, i know thats the right mouse button. I mean the blocks INSIDE your selection. In Sauerbraten i used to hold SHIFT, then i would move them somewhere and then release the key and my blocks would have moved. I found that feature really handy. In RE that seems not to be possible anymore, or is it?

This is still possible. I don't know the key atm (ingame I use them intuitively) , but you can take a look into the editing menue via 'f3'. The most important keys can be found there, they are explained also.

It is the "U" key!

Lunaran's Deathmatch Encyclopedia will come in handy for designing a level.

As for creating maps, the best way is probably to play on an editing server and just mess around until you think you're ready to make a map on your own.

This was how I learned RE's map editing system. It's way easier to ask back and forth "How do I xyz?" questions when it's in real time, not to mention that anyone with you will usually comment on your work and suggest ways to improve it or make building faster. Beware, though, that if you want to do any serious building, you'll need to do it alone, or on a private server where you can trust everyone that has access. The public has way too many trolls, and they can't resist destroying something in 5 seconds that took you 5 hours to build, and, most of the time, solo editing is easier anyways, if you have an artistic vision and don't want anybody else messing with said vision while you sketch it out. There's also the undo button, which only functions in singleplayer editing, and is an important tool when you accidentally destroy your own work in 5 seconds. Pardon the run-on sentences.

A word of WARNING:
Unless you spend 1 year or more on map editing, (or just happen to be a natural artist) you probably will never, EVER, get any content into the official game. I know I won't ever have a map featured in RE. I'm not an artist. I never will be. I don't have the... uh... whatever-it-is needed to make something truly outstanding, and I don't have the time to learn to find the whatever-it-is. If you want to make a few maps, go ahead, but know that anything official has months of work put into it, by people with years of experience working on this stuff. Cutec alone had more than a half a year's worth of work put into it. I once had a map collection thing going, but had to kill it because I didn't have as much time on my hands anymore. Start small. If you can take on a little project, then do so. Don't try to do any big projects until you're comfortable with the way the system works, and even then, proceed with caution. If you have a project that starts interfering with your real-life stuff, don't be afraid to drop it. Real-life comes first. Don't expect anyone to do anything for you. If you want something done right, do it yourself. Other people have their own stuff they want to do, they don't want to spend their time working on your map (unless you paid them) and probably never will unless they see something in the map that they like A LOT and cannot bear to see disappear into the land of unknown maps. Know your limits. I could go on and on and on... but I'm not going to anymore because 90% of this post is pointless anyways. I don't even know where I was going with that.

Don't be so hard on yourself, dude!
Yes, editing takes time to master, and yes, making a good map requires a LOT of attention to detail, and yes, there's a lot of competition and high standards, but don't let it discourage you.
The main reason to make maps is because you enjoy it. Just like any kind of art: painting, music, you name it. Because it is a lot of fun to make maps, to imagine fantastic places to have a game of Bomber-Ball on and to make them come to life in the editor. So especially when you're starting out, it's vitally important that you make maps for yourselfprimarily, and that way you get a good feel for the editor.

If you want to make maps that are useful to the community, remember: it's a cumulative effort, not a competition. Ask yourself, "How can I help?" rather than "How can I get famous?" (somewhat similar to JFK's famous saying). Or, as I like to think of it, the community's more this than this. ;)

Also, just remember, every contribution is important, and you can never have too many maps.

I can be as hard on myself as I want. If you called me a pessimist, you'd be right.

Do not link to MLP and expect me to actually watch it, lol.

I think you completely misunderstood the intent of my post. The thing I tried to get across in my post was: "Don't expect to become famous here without putting a lot of time and effort into it." I failed at communication, I guess, since you read something entirely different into my post. One more reason that text fails as a communication medium. I'd attach a sound file to every post I made, so that stuff like tone of voice and pacing could be heard, but that would clutter this website with unneeded files.
