Deathmatch Annoyance

Deathmatch Annoyance

Postby Undertaker » 06 Oct 2012, 09:53

Hey all,

First of all, this is a question not a complaint, well, sort of anyway.

Now, I am plenty familiar with the deathmatch scenarios, weapons etc... My issue is this, when I am shooting at someone, they never die. I'm lucky to get 3 kills in deathmatch. Depending on the map, it may work fine.

First of all, I was told "head shots". Ok, I do that, as a matter of fact, on one map, I was right behind a player and riddled the back of his head with the oozy, he did not die, instead I shot him until he simply fell off the platform and died basically pushing him from the shots. This is not the only occurrence and it happens with all weapons like shotgun, etc... yet when I am hit by most any weapon, regardless of skill of player, I am normally killed near instantly, leaving me to think ... wth?

I tested this tonight on quite a few matches and the one map that doesn't seem to be so bad is dead simple or "i forget the name of the other" dark something or whatever. I am not a great player yet but I know I'm good enough to use these weapons effectively, "except the sword"

So, instead of scratching my head in game constantly, if anyone has an idea as to WHY this is happening "and no, it's not my aim thank you", albeit not perfect and I do miss a lot, when someone is standing still and I still can't kill them while unloading 3 rounds of weapons, obviously hitting them, something is wrong.

Just looking for suggestions is all, maybe it's something I'm overlooking.

Thank You
Undertaker

Hi,

are you using /aboveheaddamage 1 (best to put in your autoexec, via options menu) ?
This will give you values about damage of different weapons in different circumstances.

Hi TooN,

I didn't have that so I went and put that in. It may give a good indication of what's happening then.

Thanks!

EDIT, the aboveheaddamage does not work for me. It won't show anything and when I put it into autoexec, it just gives an error. I tried it in game and it has = 0 but will not work. No idea. AAMOF the crosshair changer doesn't work either, stays on main crosshair.

aboveheaddamage doesn't necessarily have to go in the autoexec...it'll get saved to config.cfg, but either/or works.
Seeing as how you made some error adding it, just open the in-game console and type:
{l Code}: {l Select All Code}
/aboveheaddamage 1

You'll be all set after that. When you quit RE, it will save to config.cfg :)

As to why you don't seem to be doing very much damage, these are a few things that may cause you to not be doing the damage you think you should:
  • Latency difference; between you and the player you're hitting. "/showpj 1" shows packet jump in the scoreboard
  • Body part hit; hitting different body parts do different amounts of damage. Hitting the head does the most damage, while hitting the torso does less, and hitting legs does even less than torso
  • Using weapons like the shotgun at too long of a range will cause less projectiles to hit the target, therefore resulting in a lower net damage. Or, the explosion from rifle primary fire does less damage the farther from the center of the shot
  • Health regen; if you wait too long to damage your target again, his health will start to regenerate and undo the damage done. As a tip, pistol secondary is designed to interrupt health regen with its many projectiles and high spread

It could be something else, but that's what immediately came to mind. Hang in there, and don't get discouraged :)

Thanks ZeroKnight.

Unfortunately I did try the exact code in game as you have but it gave a command error or not recognized. I made sure it was exact and tried some variations of course. I did however solve it by restarting RE and it then worked.

Yeah, the range, body parts, etc... all great advice but I'm familiar with those aspects so unfortunately again, that's not it. I did try it in offline and found some interesting results.

I loaded a deathmatch in darkness. For the most part, it wasn't too bad but then I caught two instances of exactly what's going on. I would shoot the bot in the head with the oozy and see +16 or depending on weapon, +24 flying off his head but the odd part was, they just kept going. I had a good steady shooting up the platforms, down the platforms, and the numbers kept pouring out but the bot didn't die, finally, he shot me a few times killing me. That's exactly what happens in game. I hear the hits from my shots but the player does not die or have time to recover. (I'm fairly persistant lol).

On the other end of the spectrum, as I said, I've seen some newer players hit me once with weapons in DM and kill me on spot, no head shot, just outright dead. Same with offline against bots. I've also had trouble with the kicking as of late, it only works sometimes. Maybe it's tied in? I haven't changed my game at all. Running Fedora 17, latest RE, 8 gigs ram, radeon hd 5770, asrock extreme, amd 2.3 dual. Not my main system, waiting for that to get back but still, plenty of resources. I've changed nothing on here.

Now, from Fedora, I run the game from the .sh file in the RE folder, does that matter? Either way, nope, not frustrated at all, just trying to figure it out and thank you for the help.

I run sometimes into a bug, where I deal only virtual damage, it gets displayed, I hear hitsounds, but the opponent is not receiving it. But this is a consequent one, you wouldnt do one single kill until you fix it with /reconnect. So it is probably not your problem, but I thought I mention it.

Actually TooN you are right on. I've had to quit but I don't immediately rejoin since I do get a tad frustrated that I'm not able to do any damage. Next time it happens, I'll rejoin right away and see if it works. "Virtual damage" is a perfect term for it because that's exactly what's happening. Offline, it's not like that, it happens randomly but online play yes, I can't get a kill at all. People will be up to 30 kills and sometimes I don't get one at all. Mainly it'll start off where I can get 3... maybe... then I can't do any damage and that's when I have to quit.

The next time it happens, I'll try it and post back.

Thanks again.

Offline, you can try this: /serverdebug 3

This will print out messages if any of the actions from your client fail for some reason because the server denies it. If you want some easy targets to hit try: /botspeed 0
