bots don't attack

Postby ProductArchitect » 17 Jun 2012, 12:52

Coming from Sauerbraten, I really like having lots of control over weapons, jump speed, etc.

But, playing my preferred "people vs. bots" isn't nearly the same since the bots don't attack. It's more of a game of hunting than fighting. Is there any way to make the bots actually come after people and shoot?

Thanks,

There's probably something going on at your end, since by default, the bots should be playing as normal. Are you sure you haven't set something like "botspeed" to zero? When this variable is set to zero, the bots will go idle and not process any "think" functions.

Thanks for the quick reply. The bots run and jump like crazy, but rarely shoot. I do often change various settings -- but this issue happens with no changes. For example, I just launched the game, selected editmode and ares, typed botoffset 20 ... and get lots of bots, but (1) none of them approach me if I stand still, (2) they don't shoot if they happen to pass by ... or if I go out in the middle of lots of them, and chase/shoot them.

(I have a few things in autoexec.bat, but only those mentioned in viewtopic.php?f=53&t=3093 -- nothing about bots or even game speed.)

You can change the bot skill using /skillmin and /skillmax. They can go up to 101 skill.

There's also aipassive. If it's set to 1, then bots will move around, but not attack. It seems unlikely that bots are avoiding you, as Ginger said, try raising their skill. Anything below 50 gives you a pretty useless bot.

In editing, bots are automatically placed in passive mode. You cannot change this, play deathmatch if you want them to attack.

If you play a deathmatch, shoot a bot and it WILL come after you.

Ouch. I appreciate that projects such as Sauerbraten and Red Eclipse are huge undertakings so please take the following as constructive feedback from a different type of audience rather than sharp criticism. For me, the customization (including editing) is a huge benefit, so this type of apparently arbitrary limitation is ... frustrating. /newent and /delent are fun! Oh well; at least I know.

The reason for this is that editing is not supposed to be a mode in which you fight, if someone added bots during a coop-edit session, it would be annoying to have the bots shoot at players who are trying to edit in peace (it is already annoying enough when newbies do this). The only reason bots are allowed in editing is so the players can test waypoints and paths, in fact, prior to v1.2 (Cosmic Edition), you weren't able to add bots to an editing game at all. I would add an option for this, but the AI is one thing I heavily regulate and enforce strict rules upon, they need to be as unobtrusive as possible and behave in a uniform manner across any running instance of the game, so that people know what to expect and don't come here complaining. I already have the problem where there are so many variables now, I have to check what someone has changed before I can even begin to help them with their problem.
