@ Quin: Any plans to move RE to the new and improved "Cube2.5" engine?

Edit: I hope this was not asked and answered before :p

It's been asked! :p No harm done, the question was legitimate. :)

On IRC it's asked and answered close to everyday - *as I heard* - not now, not today. There's no plans to port RE to *cube 2.5* Tesseract.

Maybe in a distant future there might be a game developped with this engine, but as I understand the maps need to be built specifically for these new features.

The devs have no intention to add Tesseract/Cube 2.5 to RE, unfortunately... :(

Ok, so maybe make this a sticky, so that my stupid question might prevent others from asking the same ;)

This is a bit off topic, but I remember in some forum site where the head forum moderator had a stickied thread about using the search box. Hell, he even made a youtube video out of it, stating that if there is a question you wish to ask CHECK THE SEARCH BOX FIRST.

I actually tried Tesseract (on Sauerbraten, of course), here are the results:
The maps are too dark or too bright.
My average FPS was between 100-200.
Really nice to edit a map without any calculating shadow maps (which annoys me).
You can't get rid off the dynamic shadows if your computer is slow.

All I can say: really nice piece of "mod" or game engine fork, slow sometimes, fun to edit maps with it but. (Even though I prefer Id Tec-SHUT UP!!!!)

Since the lighting is in realtime and it focuses on computers with powerful graphics cards it would be good for building a new game from scratch... take advantage of the in-game map editing feature and use it in combination with this in order to create destructible terrain with realtime lighting and effects for a new graphics heavy game... and now I'm completely off topic.

Yep, one of the reasons I hope Tesseract never comes to RE. Its very pretty, but I like that RE focuses more on gameplay versus graphics. It sort of caters to us gamers who are on the lower tier of graphics performance :) that's not to say that RE doesn't look great; low graphics still look good to me. But personal preference is all. Everyone's different.

I couldn't have said it better.

Glad you all see my point :) I have a few ideas for a game based on Tesseract already, which will take advantage of the features in it, but I am letting them percolate in my brain while the codebase matures.

<if you don't want to read spam - skip everything to 'That's all what I think about that'>

Hmm... I think that makin' 2 versions of RE - one with Cube2, and second with Tesseract is not possible? If it is possible then there may be 'standard' and 'pro graphics' versions or RE, but... if it is possible I think that will not happen - why? Because 2 project will take too long time and make too many new bugs...

That's all what I think about that.

I think that tesseract isn't really neccessary for RE. I'm satisfied enough by the actual engine. We should make the best out of the basis we have.
Think of diablo II for example: at the time when the game came out, blizzard cames up with an outdated engine, but with the artistic finesse and the vision of a great experience they built up a very successful game. They created an addictive concept and used all possible things in that simple engine, combined with nice artworks. The whole spirit inside decided over the success not the technical side. (Besides the money they had to make advertisement.)

(Abandoned games show also, that they still can make fun although their graphics are "outdated", if they had the "spirit". My examples: Bullfrogs "Magic carpet" and "Syndicate Wars"(DOS-BOX), Shinys "Sacrifice"(was not so successfull, but great), ... .

Technical outdated doesn't mean contentual our artistical outdated. All the Indygame productions (minecraft e.g.) proofe that. I could also see that in a video games museum, that we have in Berlin :).
In our case means the cube 2 engine that more player can reach the online game. A fact that is an advantage no disadvantage.
