How do I start a LAN game on MacOS X?

I can see other instances of RedEclipse running on my LAN in the server browser, but any time I try to connect, I get an error saying the server is in "private mode" and cannot connect.
I have seen somewhere a recommendation that there be a simple "host game" button... and I second that motion in a big way.
