POLL: Music in SVN

PostPosted: 20 Nov 2011, 13:10
by TheLastProject
Today, in-game music was added, possibly temporarily, to the SVN client. Therefore, I'd like to ask everybody who tried this already to give his opinion on it.

Please note: Music has only be added to the following maps:
darkness
mist
nova
panic
processing
tranquility
Each map having their own song, looping until the round ends.

If you haven't tried it already, please try. Obtaining the SVN version is quite easily, so please either check the wiki or orbitaldecay's topic, if you haven't already.

Please also note that we are talking about the implementation of the music here, not the songs themselves.

No. So it's to DroiD, okay.
This is just so damn confusing and off-topic, can we bring it back on-topic everyone?
And please, refrain from voting if you haven't actually played on the SVN since the update or have no clue what I am talking about.

Opinion Not reflected
-I don't really care, as I'll play my own playlist in most case.
I suppose music is too subjective, everyone have his own taste. I personally not fan of 8bit-like music, except in 8bit games (only my taste).
But the tracks are really good

report: when you turn off music, then on, it don't come back until the map is reload.

First of all it's yet a nice attemp.
But one thing I don't like is the music plays permanent the same.
Maybee make it silent and only louder when there is some "action" around, and add some direction and hall-effects.

Played a bit with the new music, it definitely feels a bit repetitive with the same track looping, some randomization would be good.

I'm currently torn on the question whether or not the music should be in the default presentation of RE, after a while I'm kind of veering towards agreeing with Quin's original argument that everyone listens to their own music anyway, and also that the longevity of set music might not be very long.

One the other hand, these RE songs are definitely a part of my personal "RE playlist" given no ingame music ;)

I must agree here, most people use their own music. However, here is the bothersome part. We have a "music" volume in-game, but the only thing it triggers is the Red Eclipse theme. If you are listening to your own music, hearing the Red Eclipse theme playing through it can be quite annoying, because at this point you're hearing two songs at ones. Therefore, people that listen to their own music will most likely put music off now anyway, so the Red Eclipse theme doesn't start playing through their music. Adding the other in-game music will be enjoyed by those not using their own music (especially if we put some instructions in the folder or on the wiki about how to change it with music you like), those that put their own music on will disable the music anyway and those that dislike the music will disable it as well.

The issue at the moment is that only a few maps play music (though this is clearly just for testing purposes) and that one song loops multiple times in just one match. The best solution would be if it would be able to randomly select music from the folder and play it during the match. It would be perfect if it would also be able to play MP3 files and the likes, though I do not expect this to happen soon seeing how MP3 decoding technology is copyrighted as far as I'm aware. (Otherwise I would symlink the music directory to my music directory to hear my own songs shuffled during a match and switched with for the Red Eclipse theme when the match is over).

At any rate, I do believe that music is a great addition, though the current implementation can be improved.

Why I am quoting you? I forgot while writing the post but I kinda want more people to look at this topic and cast their vote.

I voted for number 2. I haven't yet tried playing the SVN version, but I did listen to the new songs, and it's not all that hard to imagine them looping whilst playing RE; therefore, I shall still share my opinion. The songs themselves are nicely done, I love the Techno-esque 16-Bit sound it has, (sounds are too dynamic to be reminiscent of 8-Bit, guys) and as far as looping them goes, I think if they were made to be seamless, instead of just fading in and out, they would sound better looped. Just my opinion, though.

I like the idea of playing the Red Eclipse theme at the end of the round too, it gives it that sort of "ending credits" kinda feel, haha. That and I love already hearing the Red Eclipse theme at the end of the round like we're so used to (for when I do have the RE music on).

As per the general consensus on whether or not to actually keep this music, due to the majority of gamers playing their own music instead of the game-music, I have mixed feelings. On one hand, it's good to have for completeness, and on the other hand, in an open source project, if the vast majority wont make use of it, it's not worth making it a priority goal, and is better shelved as a "possibility". I think it should work just like most other content: If someone decides to make it them self, and it's good, then by all means include it.
Again, just my opinion on the matter.

Excellent work on the music, to whoever you are, btw! I like it quite a bit :)

I want this for Wet :

If only q009 accepted to make it opensource :/

On topic, Yes, nothing to lose to add music, and by map is better. Why not add possibility for mapper to create a playlist that could play 2 or more tracks ?

I already know where this is going... Huge 5MB downloads of crappy low-quality YouTube Justin Bieber songs that the map maker thought would fit. Oh please, don't let this happen...

That is, unless the map maker can only use the music in the Red Eclipse client, which would defeat the whole point of the map maker creating the playlist in the first place.

should RE have a stye or genre of music assossiated with the whole game or should maps have there own style of music. I have some compositions for the game but clarifiction would help for new tracks.

I am definately a fan of playlists for maps from approved RE songs. Keeps it from getting repetitive. The same song repeating on a map will get old after you have played the map enough.

I'm talking about a playlist with tracks that are in the Red Eclipse release... Which will help to not ear the same track again and again and again on a server that have time limit to 1h.

And the only download that can be done from the server is the map file... That's why you'll never have tons of models, textures and other shitty content to download to play a shitty map. <3 Cube2. Eat some radial Rifle splash tru wall :x

And even if it was downloadable, you would have the same problem with single track, except you would have to 1 crap 2 time instead of 2 crap 1 time each (and paying 2 download for it however).

This brings up an excellent point. Many songs will be required to prevent music from becoming repetitive. Obviously, this will increase the size of the game. If a large number of people will turn the music off in favor of their own, is it worth increasing the size of the game 50 mb (or more) for an underused feature? What would benefit the game more: 50 mb of maps and textures or 50 mb of music (or even better, 50 mb worth of new mutators  ) ? I realize RE is still relatively small in comparison to many games, but I think there are good reasons for planning on keep it bellow the 700 mb mark (I know I, for one, am more likely to try a game out if the download is smaller). That's not to say that I'm opposed to the inclusion of music, just something to think about.

Of course, I haven't actually listened to it yet  but I will tonight before I vote.
