AUDIO FUNCTIONS?

AUDIO FUNCTIONS?

Postby rocknroll237 » 12 Aug 2011, 20:15

Hi Guys...

Just curious as to what these audio functions do:

Sound channels;
Sound frequency;
Sound Buffer Length;
Mumble Positional audio.

Also, what should they be set to by default?

Thanks,

Cam :-)

I can tell you what sound channels are. Depending on what kind of sound card you have, thats how you choose which Sound Channels to use. If you have 5.1 Surround Sound Audio, you probably shouldn't go higher than 6 channels. If you have 7.1 sound audio card, don't go higher than 8. And if you have a room full of speakers attacthed to the back of your computer (like 50)...well, you get the idea. You generally shouldn't have to go higher than 8 for a full fledged HTPC. Regular computers may use 5.1 channel like mines so I use 6 channels.

By default, most computers use a sound frequency of 44,100, but there are some that go up to 48,000. Anyway, Red Eclipse supports up to 44100 at the moment. And older computers might want to use possibly 22,050.

Ok... By default though, the sound channels thingy is at 32 (should I lower it? - I have a 7.1 soundcard)
Also, what does mumble positional audio thingy do?

Thanks :-)

If it starts at 32, you can leave it there. It will still be effective. It's like having having one speaker with an audio track that has two channels. It will still sound through mono. It just won't be dynamic.

Mumble positional audio i left turned on because I believe it has something to do with sound depth. You know how there are those guys who play COD on youtube who use headsets and 'sound whore' or use their ears to here where people are on the map? I think that's what that option was trying to get at. Idk. I like using my headset to find people. So I left it on.

Mumble positional audio posistions your voice relative to where you are in the game with respect to others who are listening in. (Unless I'm mistaken)

Thanks for the replies everyone :-)
If I have a 5.1 setup but a 7.1 soundcard, what should the channels be set to? 8 sound channels or 6?

I would say 6 because that is what you have. But then again, I'm no sound guy.

Oh, I should mention that in this case, sound channels does not mean the number of speakers you have. This simply sets the number of software mixing channels SDL can use (so the only real limiting factor is processing power). Sorry :p
