Play the SVN Version!

Postby ZeroKnight » 25 Jun 2011, 21:16

Not enough people play the SVN version, when it's better than the Ides version. There's more features (like playername color, and even a sexy new version of the title music ;D) and bug fixes, and it's updated rather frequently. The problem is, people probably just don't know how to compile SVN. Fear not, Kitsune has written a quick and simple guide (works for Mac and Linux) on how to setup and play the SVN version of Red Eclipse.

If you play the SVN version, post saying that you do, and what time you're most likely to be playing, so we can get at least a few people at once on the SVN version.
Come on, let's see more people on the SVN version! I'm tired of playing Ides!

I know, right? At the moment, the only server with Bleeding Edge on it is Kitsune's, which isn't really the problem, it's that not a lot of people play the SVN version, maybe because they don't know how to use SVN...hence why I linked to Kitsune's guide.
Well, I'm hoping at least this thread will help draw some attention to it.

I updated it to link to the downloads page, instead of directly to the windows download. i have been trying to make an automated system like we had for Nexuiz, but enet's makefile has a problem when i compile from command-line instead of gui.

I try to play the SVN (using At revision 2673. atm) but yeah there is only one server, I go on occasionally to see if anyone else plays, but nope :P
Also earlier this afternoon (GMT) I could get on the server fine, and now I get on for about 30 seconds and it disconnects with "tag type error..." I see Kitsune you updated the server and it seems that has caused the error.

I love the updates in it though. Maybe if I wiped my /.redeclipse the tag type problem would leave but I dont want to have to set up the stable version each time.
Which brings me to another issue, after using SVN and go back to normal I always have to re-input my game username, I looked about in the code but really have no idea about this game stuff so I could compile it so it sends its data/configs to ./redeclipse-svn rather then overwrite my stuff in /.redeclipse
If you have any idea what I need to change to get that it would be awesome, or even modify it upstream so it by default it will send the SVN settings in its own place.

Also FlyingHigh are you from urt forums? Unless I happen to have found 2 mac users both with that name :P
If it's is you, I'm [#![PureFilth' from over there, small world! ;)

Haha!

Anyway!
I got the problem solved and managed to send all the changed settings to folder "config" inside redeclipse-svn, I just altered the .sh and shall use that from now on, I think it should be changed by default so people dont have conflicts when running both versions, keep things tidy and simple ;)

So I am going to bed, I have to be up in a few hours, plus I checked an hour ago and still keep getting disconnected from the svn server for tag error :(

I can confirm that building this version requires zero coder skills ;-)

problem is, RE still has such a small playerbase, that everyone just goes for the release. i'm sure that over time, once we start seeing more than 25servers, more people will be interested in playing SVN to see whats upcoming.

Hm, nice suggestion on the dual settings, psykorgasm, I was wondering how to remedy that as well ^_~
And I agree with Kitsune. We need more players...then perhaps there will be more SVN playing :P Let's hope it happens quick, no?

I've started to supply two versions of RE from my PPA[1] now, redeclipse-ides and redeclipse-svn, for this purpose.
As far as I know it should work nicely, but it's ongoing work so do report issues.

I assume that is for linux users. I've been trying to do something for windows users like me.

Yes indeed, I have no idea how to change it on windows, or mac, I assume mac can use the .sh too.

I just changed:
RE_OPTIONS="-r"

To:
RE_OPTIONS="-r -hconfig"
Edit: You should be able to add "-hconfig" to the windows executable in its properties - I think.

Which leaves redeclipse-svn with:
bin data readme.txt redeclipse.sh server.sh todo.txt
config license.txt redeclipse.bat server.bat src

config containing: config.cfg init.cfg servers.cfg

It's actually in the wiki, I tried using scripts I used in other games but it didnt work, found assaultcube client commands and it tells add --home=*path here*
After visiting the wiki (for here) the second time I saw the -h*path* and it's all good.

Updated earlier, to revision 2674, tried to play with TooN but got disconnected still.

Re: Play the SVN Version!

I just got done playing the svn version on one of the servers. Some feedback:
1. I just played against bots, but they seemed much faster.
2. I don't really like the change in the radar to show "little men" instead of dots. I could effectively ignore the dots most of the time and didn't really notice them unless I was looking. But I couldn't really ignore the icons as little guys. I kept thinking the radar guys were opponents off in the distance. It was pretty distracting.
3. I know that reload can't be "turned off" but is there a way to speed it up so that reloads don't take so long? When the game is really moving fast they just seem to take forever! :)

if it was my server, then the bots are set to 90-101 skill. the people sprites are annoying, and to me are better as dots also. reload time is determined by server, i can decrease it if you want.

I can't be bothered to download and install an SVN client for the sole purpose of updating Red Eclipse. I think it's a rather poor decision to fracture an already small player base by providing the freshest content through a medium that users are by and large not familiar with. I still visit the Red Eclipse website periodically, but with still no news of an HTTP mirror or torrent file to the latest build, my interest in playing the game is dying slowly. :|

Yes, for non-linux users (I am using as my main OS... but for the sake of the argument), SVN is a rather inconvenient way of updating the game... I guess after more than 3 months now an updated release version wouldn't hurt.

Furthermore the publicity would attract more users, so why not?

I've been thinking that myself, but I wanted to get the league stuff done first. I might just tidy up for a interim release if it's that big of a deal, but it's not unusual for six months to go between releases.

I think it's pretty crucial during these early stages. Otherwise this project seems prematurely stagnant or without an active development team. Clearly this is not the case, but outwardly it may seem so.

SVN Works on Windows and MAC, I'm running Windows and am constantly updating my SVN. so why can't ya'll? A release would be good thou, but the dev team isnt really that active.

Well, aside from Red Eclipse, I have no reason to get an SVN client, and I don't want one.

you dont need a shell integrated client like tortise svn, there is always the original comandline version.

I have the SVN version - but I don't really play it all that much.
Why?
Because there's never been anyone on the servers. The Ides servers have players on them.
I think you'd get more players on the new version if you had a "beta" release for download. Just make sure it installs in different directories so players can have both amd can switch back and forth.

Well I still can't play the svn version cause I still get tag type error lol.

But anyway, the problem with having a beta/snv package downloadable is that the whole thing will need to be updated any time a single file is updated, so you will end up with:
Stable version: Many people playing
Beta/SVN version: Few people playing + entire package becomes outdated within hours/a day which then its not beta/svn any more just an outdated snapshot.
Pure SVN: Hardly anyone playing & me trying to be able to stay on a server more then 5 seconds :P

I think the fact is if someone is too stupid to use SVN despite great instructions given or just lazy, chances are they shouldn't be testing SVN anyway.
