Engines based on Cube

We actually use most of TRaK's textures under the renegotiated CC-BY license, as many of us feel GPL is not appropriate for art or Red Eclipse in general. At any rate, content in Red Eclipse is not permitted to have a "non-commercial" clause.

ballist1c {l Wrote}:Yes, it has it's own proprietary license which allows noncommercial redistribution, and use of Warsow contributions in your personal portfolio. However it is NOT open-source by any means.

Really? Well, OK then. I was referring to this, as found at http://www.warsow.net/about

We also put great emphasis on extreme customazibility and e-sports features for players and also for enthusiast modders. Here's some sweet things:

Open source engine - freedom to make complete gameplay mods.
Easy scripting engine with Javascript/C++-like style syntax for making your own gametypes! (AngelScript)
Freedom to run your own servers (ranked servers will need server key, which we provide for free upon request!)
Flexible HUD scripting engine for customizing your HUD.
Powerful "e-sports"- features like Warsow TV with OGG audio stream support for providing improved streaming capabilities.
Highly customizable graphic settings.
Global stats and match result saving for following your matches.
Rich User Interface based on XHTML/CSS standards for layout and presentation and powerful scripting engine with Javascript/C++-like syntax.
Warsow will always remain free to play game.

Warsow has an open source engine. Its game data is not open. Data, in the context of open source gaming, means things like music, sounds and 2D and 3D art.

You ain't got a game without data. The engine is useless without the data to go with it. Much like GNU + Linux, except that Linux doesn't need GNU anymore and has a wide selection of software for POSIX to choose from. :)

Assets can be replaced... but yes, I see your point.

See, this ignorance of yours is exactly what Quinn was talking about.

For one that's a Minecraft clone. You can't modify terrain as you play in Cube 2, only in map editing mode. And the Cube Engine can handle much more complicated structures than just cubes - you can make all sorts of funny shapes with the tool, even approaching spheres.
And that looks like a crappy Unity engine game (they all look about the same, see Starforge) - just MC with better graphics. Bit like Minetest then, which focuses on engineering excellence (it's written in C++ for one). You can't really compare Minecraft with its clones as they are all so far behind it in terms of what you can do (esp. the modding scene). Not that Minecraft was ever a good game anyway, I find it dreadfully boring. ;)

But anyway, do your research first before you post, that's my advice.
