Sendmap Troubles

Sendmap Troubles

Postby greaserpirate » 18 Dec 2011, 03:52

I've been trying out the "sendmap" command on the Killer server lately and getting some weird results. The maps seem to load and send fine, but all the actions, like getting hit, picking up weapons, and fragging people are delayed by almost 30 seconds. Normally there's no perceptible delay. What happens when I send a map, and is there any way I can make it not lag so much? Since Redeclipse is a game with only a handful of good maps included, and since it can load all the amazing 1,000+ maps from Quadropolis, fixing the "sendmap" command is vital to our existence.

(Also, it doesn't like sending maps imported from Sauer. Of course, you can always just save it as a Red Eclipse map, but I'm too lazy to do that too all 200 or so Sauer maps I have. )

Also, I was hearing earlier about future maps in RE having music included. Can there be an option for us Pandora folk to not download the music from a map? (I suppose the same could go for textures, and the "notexture" texture could be replaced by some plain grey texture like in Portville. However, unless someone is trying to play Red Eclipse on a calculator, why anyone would want to not be able to download textures is beyond me.)

Can't really answer the rest, but in here I will answer you the following:
The current SVN client has 3 options for "in-game music":
Off (don't play map music)
Mapmusic (play the song selected by the map)
Random (play random songs in the music directory)

Maps can only refer to songs that are already in the client, they can't trigger a download of a song or so. If the song can't be found it will play random music unless in-game music is set to off.
Hats, Afros, wings and raptor feet. This game is showing progress indeed.

Be aware of the size of the mapfile you are sending as they contain the lightmap data. This feature isn't present in sauer and some of those maps are several mb. Something that size will take several minutes to even send to the server, not to mention having other players download it simultaneously. This would probably be the source of the lag you are describing.

Its important for people to note that if you are creating a map to be distributed through the server this way to make sure your lightprecision is maxed out when creating your lightmap in order to create the smallest file, even tho visually it will be patchy. Even if you are creating a map to be distributed through a downloadable zip file you should keep your lightmaps around 3 to avoid huge map files.

Thanks for the clarifications. I could understand why Skycastle-re would be laggy becuase it's 4.4 mb, but since Isolation was pretty small I didn't expect that the lightmaps would bring the size up to 6.5 mb. When I converted and sent a smaller map (cde) there was no lag.

However, all the players said they didn't get the textures, and that everything was shown as a texture error. I just typed /sendmap, is there some other thing I have to do to send the textures?

Just to clarify more, the lightmap is just the light and shadows layer. It is not the textures.

Sending a Sauerbraten map to people that dont' have Sauerbraten installed in a folder parallel to the Red Eclipse directory will just send them a map with all textures missing. Sauerbraten maps rely on the art assets that are only included in the Sauerbraten game.

There will be a console message on startup if this is setup correctly declaring that Red Eclipse "found octa directory.. /Saurbraten"

Redistributing the maps may be violating the map's license in some cases so i can't in good conscious advise you to send a retextured version of the map either.

I bet you could write a script to do this and let it work overnight or something, but I'm not sure on the commands atm.
