Should there be items that grant skills?

Should there be items that grant skills?

An Item based skill system would work great for the regular game and will help add to the classes in league. I was thinking along the lines of items you can pick up to gain special abilities like ground pound, electric pulse, sprint, poison or ice pulse to slow opponents, heal burst for healing self or teamates ect. all of which could use substantial amounts of stamina; or modifiers like faster health recharge, stamina boosters, faster fire rate, quick reload, ect. Modifiers could even come at a cost like faster fire rate takes away from reload rate to keep players from having an advantage. Some of these abilities could come from killstreaks/as items on the map/ or as a selectable perk. I dont think the abilities should be better than shooting the guns, but would add nice variation to the playstyles available in the game.

If all this seems like too much, let me make a simpler suggestion. I think after a super jump, you should be able to use the remaining 50% of your stamina on a ground pound.

Post any special abilities or modifiers you can think of and lets try to get a realistic list and see if anyone is interested in making this idea happen.

The ground pound idea sounds cool. I'm thinking it's some sort of melee attack?

either a melee attack that requires a direct hit or an aoe that does more damage near the center. Thats something ive felt missing since the superjump was introduced. it could do some damage and slow the player for a few seconds or just do more damage. It would be great if damage could be scaled to the height you have before using it.

oh yeh and make a portal gun... : )

I think Valve might have a dispute with that, lol.

I hope this stuff, if any of it is ever made, is confined to league because these would completely unbalance regular gameplay.

I kinda hope IF it ever gets made, that it stays in a mod.

A portal or teleportation gun is a BAD idea.

Unless this kind of situations are addresed before hand:
  • CTF: Capture the flag & teleport right next to your base... Huh! My team scores
  • BB: Take the ball & teleport right before the enemy's base... Huh! My team scores :p

Anyway, it would make gameplay a zipping mess.

BTW, UT2004 had a similar gun mutator (can't remember its name).
It even had a camera to spy on the destination spot.

Back on topic, as special abilities let me suggest the following (all temporary of course):
  • Speed boost. Infinite impulse meter, allowing you to move faster (very useful for CTF & BB).
  • Fire boost. Weapons shoot & reload faster.
  • Health boost. Allowing you to heal faster (useful for any mode, primarily for DTF).
  • Invisibility. Player becomes invisible = extra scores in instagib.
  • Quinnt damage. 5x damage for any weapon (or Double damage if 5x is too much for you :p).

Be them in the form of Items or Kill spree rewards, I don't care.
Some of those are in most of the FPSs anyway.

A teleportation gun might be fun as a gag weapon; i.e., you have absolutely no control over where it teleports you :D

They should also take advantage of reusing lots of stuff. It would not be hard to have different colored grenades with different properties. Or variations of the plasma cannon that fires different elements. ...and a teleportation gun...

OP sounds like Crysis 2 multiplayer... which didn't do so well as I recall.

Would rather steer RE away from progression-based shores.

I agree with that. Fluxord's suggestion for spree rewards and the like is much more tenable.
