If we're going to go in the way of small and handheld...why not make it wrist mounted? I imagine a long, tube-like object with two braces, one strapping to the wrist, and the other to the upper forearm, a little below the elbow. The back end of the launcher stretches past the elbow a bit, letting the end of the barrel clear contact from the users' body from the backblast, while the front end of the barrel would extend far about a half a foot past the users' knuckles when a fist is made.
In all honesty, I don't know how that would help the recoil effect on the body, but it would look pretty neat compared to the jar-looking rocket launcher we've got now. A few problems I imaged would be the barrel effectively hitting the user in the head when swinging his arm a certain way, or if he were aiming downward, the end of the barrel would also hit is head, and possibly launch the backblast into his face or something.
Meh. I gave it a try.
