My custom sprites, concepts and ideas

Postby Alzter » 22 Sep 2016, 01:16

I have a package of custom Tux sprites!
It includes a fixed version of Small Tux's blink animation, Without his feet moving!
It also adds peeking animations, but they aren't coded in yet, I don't know how.
And finally... It adds a new and improved running animation for Small Tux!
The new running animation is a lot less gittery,
In the previous one, his stomach was moving back and forth, the sprite was vibrating!
I remade it, with tux leaning forward, looking motivated as ever!
Also, I'm working on adding better Fire and Ice Tux Sprites.
Most of Fire and Ice Tux's sprites are new and improved!!

What's the difference between these and the original Tux sprites?

It fixes the blink animation of small Tux, also known as "idle-0" and "idle-1".
In the old blink, Tux's feet move when he blinks.
Also I make some custom sprites for small and big tux,
"peekup" "peekdown" "peekforward" and "peekback"
They should be used when peeking using the peek keys.
I haven't coded the peek sprites in simply because I do not know how.

Thanks! I'm glad you like them! Can you possibly integrate the peeking sprites into the game?

Sorry I don't know how to do that. I'm kind of new to SuperTux. Maybe you should ask a SuperTux developer :)

That should be better. I hated the old run animation.

I love this new run animation. The old one made Tux look like he was tripping over something, keep up the good work :)

The transition from normal tux to running tux is a bit crude though

True, true... But in the old one, Tux smoothly leans forward... AND THEN LEANS BACK!
On a loop! It's like you start running, then you stop, then you start, and then you stop!

@Alzter They look pretty good. :)
Maybe, (if it's not too difficult for you to do) you could try to make a run animation for big tux, because he currently doesn't have one.

Edit: I think it looks better when his arms move. Like in the current run animation.

I kind of think the run animation should be removed altogether though. Tux can only run.

Hmm... maybe we should just scrap the run animation and stick with just using the "walk" sprites.

Guys, I have something to say about the physics.
(Try not to take this personally, prepare for a bit of criticism)

I think the physics are a bit slippery.
Sure, I'm on ice, but in air it's still slippery!

Let's say I've jumped forward. I'm jumping onto a block, and I overshoot it.
I'm at the peak of my jump, and then I want to go left to go back to the block.
I hold left, and my right velocity slows down, but by the time I actually start moving left,
I've fallen down in a pit!

The air momentum is a bit slippery!

Can you guys make that a little less slippery?
It makes jumping from block to block even harder!

Plus, why did you guys get rid of the "run" button?
I'm just curious, I liked having control over my speed.
Not saying I don't have control now, but it's hard to gain speed sometimes.

To summarise,
I think the air-physics are a bit slippery, turning from one direction to another takes a while,
The run button kinda helped balance the slippery physics, but now (since it's gone,) it's a bit harder to perfect block to block jumping.

I think you guys don't necessarily have to add the run button back,
But can you make it faster to turn across from left to right (or vise versa) in mid-air?

That would be great! :)
(Sorry for all the criticism, I'm just a little bit of a nitpick! Don't take it personally, You guys all rock!)

Don't worry about criticism, you stated it in a suitable manner, so I am totally fine with this.

As for momentum mid-air, it could possibly be fixed with this: https://github.com/SuperTux/supertux/pull/560 But that's for post 0.5.

As for the run button, phew, that's a hard one. I guess a lot of people have gotten used to it by now, so we cannot just reintegrate it, people might be wondering what the hell is wrong.

We could, however, add an option to allow for a run button.

Glad you took it well!
I think adding the run button as an option is a great idea! :D
I hope the air control works better in 0.6.0!

Guys, I found a sprite of Tux with his body inflating like a balloon! Should I animate it?

Hmm, Maybe the baloon let's you float across a level?
Anyway, I have made some new concepts! There's some for small tux...
It has a sleeping animation, If the player stays idle for a while,
And... A level clear animation! It could be used when he clears a level.

There's also concepts for big tux!
This has the same Sleep and Level Clear animations, but also with a duck animation too!
In the duck, he winds back up, and springs down!

What do you guys think? Like it?

I like it, but I feel the Level Clear animation would get boring if used at the end of every level. I like the animation a lot, just that it shouldn't be overused.
