Walrus Shop Art

Here is some concept art for the Walrus in the Shop that will sell you special items!

I made the front sprite! It's new and improved!

Here's the old front sprite:

Can I please have feedback on the sprite? What could I improve on it?

The Walrus looks really good. He really looks like someone who wants to sell some stuff.

Let's call the Walrus Gandrus and attach a Gandalf beard to it http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/05/ ... 06x423.jpg

Maybe you could make different versions of him, so he looks different in each world.
Just an idea.

Flowers maybe. Or actually just sell the hats. But if airflower is to be included levels must be tweaked.

In each world, the shop could sell various powerups. For example, you could buy a fireflower or an airflower in Icy Island and an iceflower or an earthflower in the Forest World.

https://youtu.be/P3QF4EiT2ZY shows the problems of the airflower. They weren't as bad as I thought, but there were a few things that were near to occurring, and some big issues with routes and small secret area bugs.

Maybe he should sell just accessory or something needed to come forward in the story?

It should not be needed to continue.

Then maybe some sort of key or trampoline at specially designed places, for reaching new secrets, which would normally be unreachable? Like in the old PSOne-Game Croc 2, if anyone knows that. :)

Alzter,
You can improve your artwork by adding a mustaches to your walrus. Moreover, the teeth could be more taller than that one.

Nice idea, but it makes a walrus a bit cheaty. Let him sell you an ice cube, so you start level while holding it.
Or a bomb, which will explode in 5 seconds after start, hehe.

Or Mr. Walrus could give you various quests, for example - bring him a hat, an ice cube or a bomb hehe (pick it up and finish the level while holding it), you are paid 30 coins for a hat, and 50 coins for an ice cube.
You would also hunt piranhas with ice blocks - you need to hit the fish with a block, then it flies to the ground, where you can pick it up and carry to the end of the level. Shooting the fish with fireball will kill it instead of catching. A fish would cost $70.

Ice cubes at the start would be tricky as the player would end up letting go.

I think your ideas are getting too complex. I'd stick to the powerups already there, maybe with a few tweaks to work at bit better. Just my opinion, which is apparently invalid.

Yes, the controls make it difficult to hold on to some item for a prolonged time.

Then, how about a 'star' upgrade? This will give you 10 second invincibility at the start of the level. Would be much more useful though to get it at the next save point instead of at start, but I don't think that will be easy to explain in the shop.

Why is it bad if the Walrus could be used to "cheat" (in exchange for coins, by the way). That's the whole point of it. Access to the shop or the items sold there might be limited depending on your progress in the worlds though.

I don't think x seconds at the start are useful. Rather store the item somewhere where the player can access it at any time in a level.

UPDATE: I am going to take the time and effort to redraw the Walrus, this time trying to make it less blurry and more like the official sprite art.
