POLL/IDEAS: 2-player-mode

Hello everyone,

we plan on adding a 2-player-mode to SuperTux for the next major release. We intend this to be a split-screen thing.

To make things more interesting, we also plan on adding new bonuses. These bonuses will have adverse effects on the other player. Ideas we came up with are the following:

*Turn screen dark for other player
*Increase gravity for other player / decrease gravity for yourself
*Reversing the effects of powerups and badguys (without telling them).
*(Maybe) flip levels around?

Do you guys have any other ideas?

What about game modes? Coop, race, or a treasure hunt? For racing, maybe a bonus which freezes shortly the other player?

I don't like the idea of those adverse effects. It would make levels hard to create, and much less fun to play.

I think split screen and non-split screen are both reasonable ideas. The mario games I have played used coop on the same screen and the DS version had split (over two DSes). brmbrmcar, we will create 2 player levels for this.Personally, I believe same screen coop is the most ideal situation.

I like Penny as another character. But I also think there should be more than two players that can play.

Problem with Penny is that we can't use her since she's been abducted by Nolok at that time.

So we need a "friend of Tux".

Maybe another penguin in a different color (for example grey instead of black) and a slightly different shape. (So the penguin doesn't look like a recolored Tux)

I think there could be some way to add your own mods of Tux into the game, for more fun and creativity. And I doubt anyone currently developing the game would go through the effort of making all new sprites and images for each new penguin.

The problem also with the same screen is that they'd have to be closer together the smaller the game is.

I don't know if the current levels would work with 2 players. I always thought it would be some kind of an own coop campaign. Also, in the old wiki was an idea about how penny manages to escape in world 3, at that point she would be available as an player character, theoretically. But probably way too late in the game, I think...

Problem with that is, that Tux and Penny would than still be at two different places.

But if Penny is really supposed to escape Nolok somehow on her own, there could be an offical addon, that would be about her own little adventure or something like that, where you could play as her.
(But to be honest, imo I don't think that Penny should escape from Nolok on her own.)

Idea: For the Penny sidequest levels that have been brought up, there could be a few levels after Tux beats World 3 where the player plays as Penny to try and escape Nolok's castle, which ends in failure, and she is recaptured by a group of Nolok's minions. When the player beats these levels, they can move onto the next world as Tux.

I like this idea a lot. It reminds me of Super Paper Mario on the Wii, if anyone has ever played that.

That doesn't have to mean that the player can not beat the level. After you beat the last level as Penny, there could be a cutscene, which shows how Nolok finds her (or she accidently runs into him) and sent his minions to capture her again.

If you play Penny Tux gets abducted and vice versa. If you have two players they get to play Tux and Penny and Nolok steals the radio.
