Version 0.1.0 has been released.

This release is a bit different since I have cut down on testing and polishing considerably, as suggested in the other thread. As the result, the quality of the release is likely lower than before, so in a sense it isn't the shiny x.x.0 release one might expect. On the other hand, there are several important new features, as well as some major changes under the hood, hence the version number bump.

In any case, go check it out at the project website and, if you're feeling generous, post your impressions here. I'd be glad to receive feedback and answer questions.

Well, speaking about positive sides of this release:
You've created a Ubuntu ppa for Lucid and Maverick, that's good for those people who are newbies or don't want to compile a lot
Now more people can see that the development is still ongoing => theoretically that can attract more testers/contributors.
Some words about my problem. I've added your ppa, updated libs and installed Lips of Suna. But when I launch Lips Of Suna, it says:

In fact mesa 7.10 supports some things from opengl 3.3 but it seems it is not enough.
So the only way to solve my problem is to install ATI proprietary driver (fglrx).
And I didn't find any software requirements on your site (though in README there is information about opengl 3.3) So may be you should add this requirement somewhere on the wiki?

That's probably the case, though I don't know for sure how well it'd work with your card and fglrx since I can't test on anything but my HD 5000 series card. It's one of the curses of developing alone. If your card is HD 3000 series, it probably supports the features the game needs. If that's the case, the game should at least start with fglrx. I don't know about performance, though. Lots of stuff is still unoptimized so it might be sluggish.

In the layman terms, you need a graphics card that is marketed as DirectX 10 capable. In OpenGL, that's roughly equivalent to 3.3, which is the version the game checks for at startup. If the driver reports that there's no support for it, you get the error message you got.

Well, I'm not asking you to install fglrx since I have had more than enough headaches with it. If you decide to install it and the game still doesn't start, paste me the output of glxinfo and I should be able to look into it. I don't know if I could make the game work with the open source driver, but with the glxinfo output given by the open source driver, I might be able to try.

Thanks. I could probably work around the other missing extensions, but the lack of geometry shaders is really bad. Getting the game to work without those would require big workarounds and a second set of shaders. That would be more effort and a bigger maintenance headache than I can bear at this point.

Well, I'll think about it and give it a try later if I can think of a more workable solution. I hope that the open source driver gets support for geometry shaders before that, though, since it's a really nice feature to have. They're two shader generations behind now since tessellation shaders are a part of OpenGL and fglrx already supports them.

In fact I don't think you need to redo your game to be opengl 2.1- (or generally mesa-) compatible. As you have already said this will lead to (probably) useless efforts and you'll lose much time.
And yes, I want to ask you one thing. If you'll post something like a structured changelog since the previous version (I mean version 0.0.3), then I'll try to advertise Lips Of Suna on some Russian websites.

I released 0.1.1 a couple of days ago. It has the changes since 0.1.0 listed in the NEWS file of the source tarball. Those are:

 * Quest menu that shows statuses and descriptions of quests.


I honestly don't remember what I coded before the summer but I think an incomplete changelog for 0.1.0 would be something like:

 * Crafting system with a few crafting rules.
 * Very basic character creation screen.
 * Grenades and explosives.

It shouldn't take long until 0.1.2 is out either. Most of the coding tasks I had been planning are done now so I'm going toy with models and other content some and then release.
