Free Game Music Repository

Free Game Music Repository

Postby Nikita_Sadkov » 11 Aug 2015, 04:37

I've created additional repository for game related music: https://github.com/saniv/free-game-music

Reason: some artists, like Ian Alex Mac, have pulled their CC-BY music out of free use. For example, https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Ian_ ... dditional/ had a lot more tracks before. Other projects, like Monster RPG 2 are now under unspecified license, while earlier release had public domain license.

So I have shared the original files and license info, although I doubt the authors would be happy. So use at you own risk and be prepared to be called "asshole" and receive cease and desist orders, which you can legally ignore.

I've also commited CC BY music by Jeaniro, who is a talented Ukrainian composer. Although I don't remember him releasing it somewhere outside of http://www.gamedev.ru/projects/forum/?id=196087

on soundcloud most of his tracks ain't marked as CC BY.

Source? Though I understand your motivation, are we just supposed to trust your memory to consider some art public domain? All the art in the Monster RPG 2 is under the zlib license apart from DejaVuSans.ttf and two nonfree tracks: https://github.com/Nooskewl/monster-rpg ... ICENSE.txt
Knowing that trentg loves free software as much as most of us here, I guess that if those two tracks were previously distributed as public domain, this was a mistake. I suppose trentg is not the author of the "royaltee free" tracks, and thus can't make them public domain.
Godot Engine project manager and maintainer.
Occasional FOSS gamedev: Lugaru, OpenDungeons, Jetpaca, Minilens.

Nooskewl has just pulled out the PD license, but Internet, and OGA in particular, still remember it as public domain:
http://opengameart.org/content/main-art ... ster-rpg-2
"The game is licensed under the Give It Your Own License, License, and I've chosen to re-license them under CC0, but I'm sure the good folks at Nooskewl Games would appreciate a shout out if you use their works. "

Yet the license of Monster RPG 2 distribution MonsterRPG2-2.11.1-Windows.zip dated as of 09-01-2015 reads as
Nooskewl Freeware License

You are granted rights to use the freeware version of this
game provided you do not charge anyone for any part of it.

I.e. all rights reserved.

Here is the full story:

Given that it was PD before, I've also committed it as PD, so it can be more easily used with GPL code.

Although some people would consider such behaviour assholish, because it goes against author's will.

BTW, that is not an isolated case. Before that, the Pixen (amazingly good pixelart editor) transitioned to closed source:
https://github.com/Pixen/Pixen
> With the number of Pixen clones in the Mac App Store outnumbering contributions to the project, Pixen is no longer open source. Consequently, the source tree hosted on GitHub is over two years old.

Although I'm unsure if the current maintainer holds the trademark.
