See: http://opengameart.org/forumtopic/commu ... e-for-vcmi

Just an idea for now, and I am not going to do it alone. But it could be a cool community project.

devnewton {l Wrote}:What's VCMI?

VCMI is a libre reimplementation of the Heroes of Might and Magic III engine. For now it needs the commercial 3DO game assets to be used (which is fine, Heroes III still is a great game, so it's nice to be able to play it on all platforms using a FLOSS engine). A libre asset pack for VCMI would make it possible to create new libre games based on the HoMM3 mechanics... and that would be awesome :-)

Thanks for the explanation, although clicking on the link would have made it clear also :p

Please check the latest post by me on OGA for the "vote" on art-style and comment either there directly or in this thread.

It sounds awesome.

But is there a list of "sprites"?

Because the OpenTTD has a list of graphics....I have been looking for the page in the wiki....and I don't find.

@mdtrooper you meant this :-

https://wiki.openttd.org/Graphics_Replacement

There were two or more projects to do Graphics Replacement in OpenTTD . It was one of the projects where I saw commercial graphics removed and FOSS graphics available for the full-game over a period of time.

https://wiki.openttd.org/?title=Graphic ... oldid=3771 (I just dug this from the wiki history, apparently they started doing this in 2005)

https://wiki.openttd.org/Old_Graphics_Replacement (this was another attempt)

I do remember somewhere in 2k7/'8 where the project suffered a setback when one of their art contributors took with him lot of assets when he went away but that's a different story.

I have not kept up with development of OpenTTD so dunno how far they have come along. I do know they were working on having 32 bit graphics sometime in future but have no idea .

Yes shirish.

The idea of generate a libre/free content pack (graphics...sounds...) for VCMI sounds great.

Because some days ago (in the office) I installed the OpenTTD from repository (linux-mint) and only I played the game (when the boss is out ;) ),

Because in the repository there are free art packages. Playing to OpenTTD is easy, without any other problem.

And I still remember some years ago when I wanted play to OpenTTD, I was having to search any abandonware (in spain is not ilegal but too it is not legal) of TTD, copy some files to the "weird" directory...and after I could play.

Now OpenTTD is a complete and standalone free game. As other examples as OpenArena...

I think a complete and standalone VCMI sound f**king great.

Well the idea for now is not to create a 1:1 sprite replacement as that will limit the potential reuse of existing art even more. Besides that, story and level scripting etc. is also non-free so it wouldn't help that much.
I rather hope that we can create an easy to expand base graphics set people can use to make mods with. This is especially interesting as VCMI includes a cool launcher that allows you to easily browse and download existing mods, kind of like you can do in the Battle of Wesnoth mod menu.

Any thoughts about using those vector graphics from Code Combat and Kenny's stuff from OGA? Seem like the most fitting and good looking 2D art that is available.
