New site with free music and soundscapes

Postby Eric Matyas » 20 Jun 2014, 11:09

Hi everyone,

I've got a new site up with free music and soundscapes for games, films and other media:

soundimage.org

It's the original...all my own stuff. All I ask is to be properly credited as stated on my homepage.

I hope it's helpful. Any feedback, suggestions, etc., is welcome and much appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric

Nice site and sounds, but please give them a standard license for easier use in open-source projects (and better legal protection). Your requirements sound pretty much like the Creative Commons- Attribution license: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Thanks.

@Julius: into a musics list page, as in there: http://soundimage.org/sci-fi/, there's is a description at the bottom that says that the files are under CC-BY-SA 4.0 including the link to Creative Commons website :)

Thanks for the share! I taken some of your tracks for my game FAR Colony, I will put you in the credits when one day I will finally implement a sound and music system into the game.

Thanks Eric, your site is excellent and CC-BY is a great choice!

However, I just noticed this on your front page:

Prohibited Uses

The use of this music in any project considered to be pornographic in nature and/or violates Youtube community standards is strictly prohibited.

Even though it's vanishingly unlikely that anyone will use your music in pornographic media, this clause still contradicts CC-BY; free to use means free to use for all, no strings attached. I recommend you remove that clause to avoid confusion.

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of expanding the site with new pages/genres of music and wanted to reach out and ask you if you had any suggestions for genres/styles/feels of music that would be helpful to you.

I have some ideas of my own, but I'm sure there are all kinds of styles I haven't thought of.

All suggestions are welcome and very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Eric

Hi everyone,

It was brought to my attention that pretty much any music on my site could potentially be game music...(not just the music on the "Fantasy/Game Music" page)...so I've gone ahead and renamed that page "Fantasy." None of the pieces have moved, though...everything is still in the same place.

That said, I have some new tracks for you on the Fantasy page as well as the Drama and Upbeat pages.

I hope they are helpful,

Eric

When looking for music for a game, I look for two things in particular: mood and theme.

Mood depends on the gameplay. Is it fast-paced, or relaxed? Is it during a build-up, or a climactic boss-battle? Is it a creepy/horror section, or a wide-open arena?

To give a few examples, creepy music is often arhythmic and atonal. Boss battles are fast but full of tension and most likely in a minor key.

Theme is less important but must fit with the game's setting. Fantasy/medieval settings would often feature orchestral instruments and maybe period instruments like lutes or lyres; sci-fi settings often have lots of synths. Forests might be backed with Celtic music, deserts with Arabic music - very cliche I know.

Hope this helps.

Hi everyone,

I've had several requests for action pieces, so I've started an "Action" page and uploaded 5 new pieces with varying styles. If there's a particular style you're interested in, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I also uploaded some new pieces on the Nature/Science page as well as the Technology page. I hope they are helpful.

Thanks for all your feedback and support,
Eric

Hi everyone,

I've posted some new tracks on the following pages:

Sci-Fi/Space
Quiet/Peaceful/Mellow

I've also received a number of requests for longer pieces (in general) so I thought I'd begin creating longer versions of some of my tracks.

If you all have any thoughts about tracks of mine that you'd like to use, but wish were longer, please let me know. :)

Thanks,
Eric

Excellent, my only suggestion is to use a louder volume. Im using old headsets and cant properly listen the music. Probably not a problem with speakers.

If you can, you might want to try running the audio from your computer through a stereo receiver...that's what I do. :-)

Thanks for checking out my site!
