BTW does anyone know where I can find a .max importer for Blender? I searched for an importer some months ago, but couldn't find one.

All resources on the web I found indicate that this is impossible

Afaik .max is 3d-studio-max internal format, likely proprietary and version dependent. (don't confuse with the mesh-dump format .3ds, iirc looses interesting data though).
It's probably neccessary to export the models from inside max (e.g. student version or so) and run an exporter to some generic/usable format : e.g. blender or collada?

The NeL shapes at http://media.ryzom.com might be useful. Also note:
3D objects were made with 3dsmax. Work is already underway to eliminate that dependency and use free software alternatives like Blender.

From http://dev.ryzom.com/wiki/ryzom/HELP_US - I recommend going to #ryzom :)
