Slime Volley needs new sounds!

Slime Volley needs new sounds!

Postby MCMic » 16 Apr 2010, 19:09

Hi.
We use in Slime Volley some sounds we took in the Ubuntu GNOME's theme which are under license CC-BY-SA 2.0.

Slime Volley should soon be in Debian's games repository. But Debian consider the CC-BY-SA is free since the 3.0.
So we need new sounds that are under a license that's free for Debian people.

I sent a mail to the author of the sounds we actually use but I have no answer by now.

So if someone here could find/create sounds for Slime Volley that are under the good license, it would be great.

The files are s_filet.wav, s_jg_m.wav, s_mur.wav and s_slime.wav in the Modern theme.

You can download the game here : http://slime.tuxfamily.org/down.php

Is there maybe a way to ask for a license upgrade? Can you find author information or at least the full path and package which the souds are from? I´d then try finding the repository where it is from and maybe find out the author by taking a look at the history.

Or would you rather have the sounds to be replaced, not only for license reasons? :)

The sounds are from the package "ubuntu-sounds" of Ubuntu (http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/ubuntu-sounds) , I tried contact the authors like I said but I didn't receive any answer.
I'd rather keep the same sounds.

Oh my, I need to stop skipping text lines, sorry. :oops:

Hm. Asking for a license update publicly at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s ... ddquestion could perhaps have an effect..

Well, OGA sfx section might help.

So I listened to the sounds and besides s_jg_m.wav they sound like clicks.

Hm.. I remembered that krank has a lot of 'collision' sounds.. take a listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=er65RdChnHs - the sounds are public domain!

The raw sounds I recorded in http://www.freesound.org/packsViewSingle.php?id=5673 might be of help as well

I was right, the krank sounds are not too bad in slime volley.
krankSoundsForSlimeVolley.7z
water/link.wav -> s_slime.wav
space/part.wav -> s_mur.wav
industry/unlink.wav -> s_filet.wav
summer/link.wav -> s_jg_m.wav (very fitting IMHO!)
(440.03 KiB) Downloaded 349 times

The sounds are by legoluft and in the public domain, if krank's license is right, which I have the feeling is right.

And man, this game is really fun if you do something about the background image (see vid description) and remove the Fullscreening.. and have a hysterical aunt as your co-player. :D

I wish I could use other resolutions :|

Is slime volley not being developed any more?

PS: here's a video of how krank sounds sound in Slime Volley.

I like the actual background. But you can make a theme with images you prefer :)
About sounds, it sounds really weird, the only one that actually fit is the one for s_jg_m.wav
But I just found out that this one is not from the same package, it's a sound of KDE 3, I have to check its license.

Slime Volley isn't really developed, we will just release the actual svn version as 2.4.2 in some weeks, and we intent to develop a C++ version that will be Slime Volley 3, using something like box2D. But we're not sure yet we'll have the time for it.

[EDIT] s_jg_m.wav is actually from KDE, it's "KDE_Beep_RimShot.wav". The license is obviously good for Debian since it's in their repositories.

I would like to submit this image then: http://www.box.net/shared/qrparrx6v5 call it "qLOVE" :)

Or will you need a complete theme?

A complete theme would be better :-)
It contains a background image, an other background image for the menu, sounds, and images for slimes and the ball (and the arrow).
But each file that miss will be replaced by the one from the default theme, you don't have to do all this.

About your background image, you should make a net that is just on the ground, the floor is higher than in the game in your background.
You can use this : http://www.yagraph.org/images/slimevolley-template.png
If you just don't like the background, you can try themes mushroom and arash from the website : http://slime.tuxfamily.org/down.php

About the sounds, we have in the svn new sounds from KDE and your opengameart link (thanks for that :) ).
I have to try playing with these sounds.
