Tutorial for pixel art spaceships needed

Postby Sauer2 » 31 Jan 2010, 14:48

Does someone know a good tutorial for spaceships in pixel art?
Only thing i managed to do was this,

but i'd rather like to be able to do it like this:

I don't think there would be many if any tutorials focussing purely on spaceships.. I'd think just general pixelart tutorials + lots of practise would work best.. Maybe try a modular approach, like making lots of different sets of engines, wings, cockpits, and then mixing and matching them to make cool combinations could work..

Was it not you, who made http://opengameart.org/content/spoof-pixel-ships and http://opengameart.org/content/spoof-pi ... le-enemies ? :)

This tutorial http://twh.telefragged.com/2d/cannon.html migh be of help.

PS: ..hmm.. a few hints here: http://gamesprites.wikicomplete.info/fo ... te-project

PPS: the ship you're showing here looks... like a green-painted Romulan bird of prey? (ok, just a biit)

Well, I have to admit, I'm often very impatient when it comes to art. Working on that... ;)

Lol, I wouldn't count this as art. Maybe the ship i tried to make is a bit between this and real pixel art, maybe because it is too small to make it look good.

Thanks for the tuts so far, Iwan. I'm curious about the first one, since it seems to me like a PS-tutorial, but the approach is nice. :)

A bit ;)

Check out this biiiiig canon. ;)

I don't get what it is but something is wrong with the dithering, isn't it? (I mean, apart from the color palette. :) )

Hehe nice gun. Your space ship is indeed a bit small, that makes it kinda difficult to paint details and surface textures. Maybe you should try to increase the contrast a little bit and try to add lights, so that the edges stand out more (that's very difficult or even impossible if that part of the ship is only 1 or 2 pixels wide ;) ). I tried to improve your ship already to show what I mean. And I find it looks better if the ship is less saturated.

BTW I painted some 2D ships for my Battlefleet Gothic VASSAL module awhile ago. You can see them here: http://profile.imageshack.us/user/skorpio2011

I haven't licensed them yet. Some are my own designs, the other ships are BFG designs that can't be released under a open source license.

Well, that looks much better. But if you zoom in it looks some kinda unlogical to me. I guess, pixel art is not my cup of tea and I'll stay with rough vector graphics. ;)

Thank you for your help, thought.

It seemed so hard to follow without zooming in, so I'm attaching 200% and 400% zooms :)

Looks real nice, now some love to the tower to.
I agree with Q until I post differently.

The tower looks like a puzzle/game in itself :D at least the shell-like form looks very fun.

That would make for a pretty interesting art game, play as a spaceship, the next level uses the spaceships' sprite as a map, using some small detail of the space ship as a player sprite, and this repeats, until it comes to a level that uses the original level's map as a player sprite, and then the whole thing repeats...

Also, I'm not sure if sauer intended the "tower" to be a tower, rather a big barrel and a small connecting point

That's an interesting idea, and if I understood you right, you would at least need a space level, a flying robot level, a nanobot level and an electron level that get zoomed in from the last.

Oh, and by the way: It's not a tower but a big barrel. :)

Is there a SVG game library available at the moment? If not, you would have to use fading effects.

Well, you could zoom in still, it would only look not very nice :) (one could use images of different size to fade... oh, that's what you mean, right? Good idea!

JVGS, by the author of Fal of Imiryn has a SVG engine. As I understand it pre-renders the svgs.

Thanks, some inspiration how the graphics (not the perspective) of some further stages could look. http://www.allegro.cc/depot/ZaxxonRetroRemake/
Too bad it's CS.

Well, I don't believe this this would work in real time, as useful for resolutions it may be. another approach would be using two graphics and begin showing the second, detailed one only from a high zoom level, but i guess it is pretty hard to make it beautiful.

That would be rather chaotic. The first suggestion is tied to some remark that is still connected to the image. Instead a new thread with the idea and reference image should be created if anyone is interested in developing the idea further :)

Guess that won't be me, I'm gonna try out something with the spoof pack first. You gave me ideas. :p

To say this short, Alchemy seems like a mixture of Inkscape and MyPaint.
