If you have a program open which has exclusive access to the audio device, and you then start OD, OD will crash instead of just starting without sound. I have not tested this on linux, but my guess is that we get the same behaviour. I was running Foobar2000 which was playing music by kernel streaming to my usb-dac.
The audio playback part should check if the audio system will let it have access to and device, if so it should play sound, else it should just continue without the audio system. My guess is there is some exception we are not handling currently, if so it is an easy bug-fix
