I can think of a number acoustic messages that would fit greatly into the game:

"All systems clear." or short "Systems clear."
"Attempting system reboot."
"Reboot failed."
"Warning! Weapon overheating."
"Warning! System failure."
"Warning! Critical system failure."
"Warning! Critical reactor temperature."
"Warning! Critical damage."
"Initiating system shutdown."
"Initiating reactor shutdown."
Might sound a bit cheesy, but anyway: "Eject, eject, eject!"

I applied espeak -p 0 to the following lines for fun testing:
All systems operational.
All systems fully operational.
System check complete.
Systems check complete.
Ready to go.
Ready to rumble.
All components fully functional.
All components are fully functional.
Bringing all systems on-line.
Bringing all systems online.
System on-line.
System online.
Systems on-line.
Systems online.
All systems clear.
Systems clear.
System clear.

About emergency/warning notifications: speed of information might be critical here and short sounds that are clearly identifiable might be more suited for these cases. I would also avoid voice for sounds that may constantly be repeated (overheating probably would be a case).

Why are you assuming that they are going to be repeated constantly? The overheat warning would be triggered once before the weapon goes off-line, is damaged. The purpose is to assist the pilot in conditions where his visual focus is not on the MFDs.

But yeah a few(2-3) emergency warning singnals(buzzers) would do the job more effectively. The only problem would be to teach the pilot the meaning of the sounds.

I watched the second alternative reality Star Trek movie and was impressed by the voice of 0718. I remembered this thread and tried to create voice lines that have a similar feel to them. I used sox for doing so and created a simple script 'cydark', available at http://github.com/qubodup/ogatools

The resulting voices are avilable at http://opengameart.org/content/deep-sys ... uter-voice under ccby3.

Wow, you identified something good about the latest Star Trek movie. I had given up entirely when the tribble appeared on screen.
