"Defend" Game Mode

"Defend" Game Mode

Postby qubodup » 06 Aug 2011, 21:32

Hey,

how about making the game replayable by adding a "Defend" game mode:

You [and a number of allied mechs] have to prevent a group of mechs [or multiple groups/waves of mechs] from destroying a specific building [or a set of buildings].

Required:
  • A way to start the defend mode: main menu or command-line parameter
  • Either procedural generation of a level + placement of the important-building (command center, sensor/sattelite dish, factory, pump station...) + placement of attackers and defenders or a way to create maps for that game mode
  • AI needs to aim for the building but defend itself for surviving until it can reach the building
  • Win/lose notification/screen

Optional:
  • A method for enemy waves to enter the map: dropships for example

A simple way to add this mode (without beginning to polish the ai) could be spawning two kinds of foes:

a) Kamikaze (straight towards primary taget, attacking target, ignoring offenders)
b) Attackers (walk towards target and attack any offender => patrol)

Space sims often use Cruise-Missiles and Space-Ships for those two.
So your job is to survive and intercept.

ps. nice video, I wonder did you discover all the hidden locations? And how far did you walk?

I gave it another try (motivated by the promise of a hidden location/easter egg(?) :) ) and all I found was a weirdly-textured building (can be seen around 15:15): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh9VYspOhFU

BTW you missed the pyramid you already know from previous releases (North-East / 45°, you missed it by about 200m).
It's always interesting to see how somebody else experiences your game and follow them through their eyes.
That's invaluable and I get to notice different details/faults/possibilities I've already blended out because I've seen/played it over and over.

Maybe I should add a location or easter egg every release to enhance the world...?
