Speaking of interesting animals, do you know the naked mole rats? They are mammals but form colonies like ants or bees, with a queen, soldiers and workers. They also seem to feel no pain, can't get cancer and can live almost 20 years AND they are very ugly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcvLYx8YDjY

IMHO the naked mole rats are far more interesting. They would be perfect for a Dwarf Fortress like game.

How about a OpenDungeons total conversion? Instead of playing the evil overlord, you get to be in charge of a giant naked mole rats colony and plot to take over the world!
