Unbinding: The binding of Isaac

Unbinding: The binding of Isaac

The binding of Issac is a indie game. It's like the Legend of zelda inside the dungeons from NES and Snes as per looks. As far as feel it's kind of unique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Irm_scgytY .

It's a petty fun game with a fairly high level of replayability. It would be nice to see a free alternative. Though I'd see a few changes. Being built in flash came with a number of obvious limits. The creator implemented classes with select itemization and stats. Cain is a "thief". He starts with a key and a lucky foot. The foot gives him better odds at mini games an makes sure pills give only beneficial stats. Eve the "druid" starts with a pet that activates while take a hit and a stat boosting transformation when she gets to half a heart. Ect.
The stats are simple. Movement speed, attack speed, Attack power, Attack range.

Instead of implementing classes I'd set the starting stat weights to a certain level and have them manipulatable. I'd have a choice of certain starting items (once they are unlocked) Limit to one or two. I'd add multiplayer mode and a death match mode. I'd choose a more neutral lore base than the bible.

This is an old school Zelda with a FLOSS engine. The data are the one from Zelda so it's kind of tricky about their license, but the source code is under GPL, so this seems ideal to do a project like the one you're talking about.

found this: https://github.com/DuncanKeller/The-Unbinding but doesn't look like it's active at the moment. I don't know what it looks like. I'm not a developer and I can't compile.

Here's a demo if you'd like to sample the play style: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/581168

Unbound: Zombies in my basement

So here is my proposal. A 3rd person shooter. Auto-generated maps in the style of nes and snes. Ideally like in the bindings of Isaac These maps would be randomly generated.

The character will have 5 stats. Hitpoints, Projectile range, Projectile speed, Projectile damage, Character movement speed. You have 15 points of which 5 fill one of each category. The other 10 points you can choose where to put them.

There will be 3 types of pick ups in the game. Passive items, active items, and on use items. Passive items boost stats. Active items manipulate how your projectiles work such as giving your projectiles a boomerang effect. On use items work once per full charge of a special resource. They use up the full charge of that resource and only work when the resource is fully charge. That resource recharges a little bit for every room cleared with active enemies. Once a room is cleared it will remain empty. You can only have one on use item. In addition to these items you get keys, bombs, coins, hp refills, and disposable items that have the effect of passive items, active items, and on use items. The effects of disposable items that give passive stat boosts are permanent while all others aren't.

The premise of the game a Zombie apocalypse forces you underground into a mine. While it's of course more dangerous outside you find that the in the mine you are going to have to fight to survive. Once the mine entrance collapses you have no choice but to press onward.

One boss per level. Something to the effect of 10 levels. When placing yours stats t the beginning of the game you can pick 2 items. Such as 2 coins, 2 keys, 2 bombs, 1 key and 1 bomb, one passive item and 1 active item or ect.

Perhaps you should investigate Egoboo:

Investigate it to use it's engine to make this game?

I agree with charlie, that Egoboo already has many of the features that TBoI has. If I remember correctly, I had trouble controlling (either the player character or the camera or both) and possibly compiling it though. I was also rather lost regarding in-game goals and abilities.

If you'd rather mod a game, to create Unbinding - rather than code it up from the ground - Egoboo might be a very good choice. I am not a programmer and can't judge its quality though. :)
