Remake of Constructor or Death Rally

Remake of Constructor or Death Rally

Postby FreakNigh » 23 Jun 2011, 09:24

I was just wondering if anyone would like to start a project of remaking Constructor or Death Rally with me.

Also I'd be interested in making a spin off game with the graphics from Z or gangsters. Possibly a team fortress or mmorpg style game?

Or maybe you have a better remake suggestion?

What amazing timing, a death-rally-like game recently introduced itself here: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1537 . Also there's an old death rally like: http://sourceforge.net/projects/trophy/

Ah well I mean using the original graphics and sounds etc. Also I am only interested in C/C++ projects preferably SDL based.

I believe Trophy is C or C++ based.

Interesting...
Freeware re-release

In May 2009 programmer Jari Komppa got in contact with Remedy, volunteering to prepare an open-source release of Death Rally. While releasing the game as open-source could not be agreed upon, Komppa instead started working on porting the game to modern Microsoft Windows systems.[5] In consequence of his work, Remedy released Death Rally as freeware on 20 October 2009.[4]
An article chronicling Komppa's work was printed in an April 2010 issue of Game Developer magazine and later posted online.

A shame that they coulndn't release the source publicly. Maybe guess this could be related to the later iPhone port? EDIT: or not, the iPhone one was a remake, not a port.
I wish more companies would release their old games. Should try to contact more companies, maybe, with a community backing it, some would agree to release stuff to the public?

Ya I'm hung up as the sole developer in a remake and the process is not worth it as a single developer. They should just release the source. However I'm not really interested in making games persay but interested in bringing the old classics back to life. However to be fair though, as much as we loved these classics I don't think they can be revived or would have many players if it was remade.

I've read a lot of interviews of big game developers and the story is always the same, game developers always sacrifice to make games.

It would be awesome to remake Constructor. Recently I've repurchased the game via gog.com and it felt great to play it again. I'm studying game development and I wish I could contribute in such a project as a Constructor remake. If only they had released the source code, I think it would be much easier to update/remake the game.

Well a constructor remake would be a very advanced project. You'd have to be at least a mid level developer and almost surely there would have to be a senior level developer constantly overseeing development. What kind of help would you be considering giving? Are you willing to work on it formally part time (20-30 hours per week) for at least a year? Otherwise the development time will explode up to 5 years to never accomplished.

I though it would a very advanced project and as I'm still studying game development, I think I cannot give so much help. If I had enough knowledge, I would work on it for at least 20 hours per week. I hope you can assembly a dedicated team to remake this great game. When I have to necessary experience, I'll try to join the team.

If I were to think about starting to work on it, I would need at least one other people as dedicated and capable as myself from the very start. I'm not looking to pull the weight of another free massive project like this.
