Adding to Ubuntu Software Center

Adding to Ubuntu Software Center

Postby shazzner » 19 Jun 2012, 01:00

Hi there!

I've been following the progress on M&MS, I think it would be great in the Ubuntu software center. I've been helping out in trying to get free and open source games into their app center.
We're currently promoting app development in Ubuntu and at the same time helping Free and Open Source Software developers promote their applications by making it easy for them to publish and expose them to millions of users.

If you are interested in distributing your application through the Software Center, it is a very easy process to submit it through our App Developer Portal.

You can get started in a few minutes on:
https://developer.ubuntu.com/publish/

Or you can go directly to:
https://myapps.developer.ubuntu.com

And get support on:
http://www.askubuntu.com/questions/ask? ... evelopment
https://developer.ubuntu.com/community
http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=417

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Edit: sorry if this sounds like spam! I've actually been following this game on free gamer for a while and Ubuntu announced a big push to get these games in the software center. :)

Hello shazzner!

Thank you for your interest. We agree with you that it would be nice if we had our game easily available on linux distributions. I have created a PPA for Ubuntu but that's not quite the same as in software center. It would be also interesting to see ratings and comments on software center. :)

I think that the Ubuntu App Portal isn't the right way to do it. It's more meant for proprietary software though free and open source applications can also be there. The traditional and more suitable way for free software would be somehow get the application to Debian or Ubuntu repositories. However this is can be really hard and take a lot of time, application developers can't straight upload applications there and updating process is long. In this way Ubuntu App Portal would be nicer to use. This makes it a viable solution.

I hope you have enjoyed this game. We're releasing hopefully soon the next version 0.4. After the release we need to think about distributing so thank you for making this suggestion. :D

Hi Odamite!

I do think in the long run getting into the official repos is the best way, but just so you know, you can submit your application into the developer portal straight away and get it into Ubuntu 12.04 while also submitting it for the official repositories for Debian and Ubuntu 12.10. No reason to wait and might help get some exposure. :)

Thank you for your interest, while it will certainly create some exposure it might not be the right time.
If we decide to add it after all, we will probably do this when there's a new release, which hopefully will be out soon. :)
