I wish more people understood the value of freedom and privacy as a matter of principle, and not as a means to some evil end.

Actually, software development is the other side of the coin to psychology. So, while Psychology can be compared to yoga, accepting the world as it is, software development can be compared to magic, that is making changes in the world.
Ironically the same types of people are drawn to both disciplines.
