Seems like a pretty good idea, and it is an all open standard. They are having a Kickstarter currently:

Also interesting to note is that it will include a background integration of crypt-currencies (bitcoin etc.), so that could ease adoption of these (although I am personally skeptical if you even want something like that... but that's another topic).

There's lots of software like this already. The fact is that it's not going anywhere until real people (not just nerds like us) start to use it and until the "Tweet this" button on every website is replaced with "Trsst this".

Well, that is why they plan to tightly integrate it with RSS and also allow for Twitter feeds to be forwarded.

Honestly, I don't see the point in it much either, but it is used a lot.

This however is rather using the popularity of it to further it's goal of improving the RSS idea and integrating it with other neat tools. A twitter like functionality is really just one of the possible uses.

By the end of last year had twitter had reported to have 883 million registered users, of which 232 million are active.
Eventhough the number of active members is far lower than the registered ones, with 200+ million users one can state it's used alot.

Yes but I still question the "quality" of the audience based on purely subjective criteria. I have never had problems of libel, defamation, public insults, ... with Identi.ca users whereas it has happened numerous times with Twitter users the 4 last years.
