Any recommendations for free, opensource and ethical file hosting services?

For what purpose?

Firefox send might be an option: https://send.firefox.com/

Hosting costs money, so I believe you have to choose one between "free as in free beer" and "ethical".
Julius' suggestion (Firefox Send) is excellent for file-sending.

Thanks for the suggestions :) The purpose is to distribute up-to-date copies of backups.

sometimes archive.org can be used (it was used as jamendo backend for some time), but for personal files its probably will not work (also its not open source)
disroot.org has 1gb/30day free uploads (and its open source)

ideally for such needs it would be IPFS but ipfs is not very mature now and files are not really permanent (you need a pin-service to be sure they're permanent)
pinata is such service (https://pinata.cloud/pricing) and they have 1gb free tier (but i didn't try them)
