Sounds to be included in next release

Sounds to be included in next release

Postby oln » 09 Feb 2011, 14:12

Referring to this https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/opendungeons/ticket/18
We need to decide on what to prioritise.
We currently have:
    digging
rock falling (e.g tile is dug out)
    sword sounds
    and a click sound

What else do we want for the next release?

I'd not say "release if we have this and that", but I'd say "release on date x (+ optionally 3 days extra if a serious bug is found in last second)" and include everything that we have until this "date x".

The game is not finished, so you don't need to worry about if it's a "complete" release. It's just a release to show the progress.

That was sort of the thought. This post was more to discuss what we want to try to have ready by the date, and decide what should be included in the released package.

blablub, that is exactly the plan. The release candidate deadline is the end of the month and whatever we have at that time is really what gets in. We then test for one week and fix any major issues that pop up and then put out an official release that will be stable for some length of time until the next release cycle. The reason we are having official lists of what goes in is that the last few times we have release we spent a lot of time copying around files and just getting everything in one place, and even with several weeks of that we still missed some things. This time we are trying to make a list ahead of time so that everything can get assembled and all be ready at the same time.

Anyway, regarding the topic of this thread: we should also have sounds that indicate events. One would be a death sound that is played when any creature dies (can be the same sound for all creatures). And a sound for when creatures come through the portal, again the same sound for each would be fine. This helps testing the AI and other routines a lot easier since you know exactly when these things take place, even if the animations are incorrectly timed or not being played correctly. It also lets you monitor the battle even if it is offscreen temporarily.

I hope you are not using those for FOSS games, as their license clearly isn't compatible to FOSS. Free doesn't mean libre!

Yeah, I wondered about that. It says they are available for commercial apps for $20 but they probably wouldn't give us an OSS compatible license.

The license is there:
http://sounds.beachware.com/rights.htm

"Non-Commercial
The sounds are license and royalty free for non-commercial use."

Is this compatible to CC or GNU licenses?

Click sound is the sound that is currently used for picking up, building rooms, selecting tiles and more. Just a replacement untill we have sounds for these things.

I got the claim recorded, I have attached it here for you to hear it. I will cut it up and add it to the SVN later. I like the first of the three samples best how about you?

I like the sound. But I think it is a bit to slow (or a bit to long). If you have 10 imps claiming new land they are much faster than this sound, I believe.

Yes that is true, how long do you think it should be? But they can be played over each other, can try and listen how it sounds.

Edit: it is not a problem, as you can hear :)

ooh, I like this sound: http://opengameart.org/node/5091 Could be used for creature skill level ups maybe?

Also, in regard to the tile claiming sound, could we differentiate them from different.. factions.. maybe? The one Svenksmand made would fit the constructs, but it would be interesting to be able to tell who is gaining ground from listening alone

Could someone add this ClaimTIle sound to the game so it will make it for the 0.4.9 release?
