Rock Golem

looking for some feedback on the animations before I move on to polishing up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBEtGVtT-v0

The animations have been transfered over to umask007's golem revision, which is going to save me from having to unwrap and fix the weighting issues the original had :D . although, I'm probably going to do some minor touch ups on the textures.

also, I'm thinking of scraping the current rock throwing animations for a more heavier rock throwing one(usless there's objections, of course). the reason for the rock throwing variations was I was trying to find the best way to make the rock appear. I originally intended to make the golem pick it up from the ground, but I thought that would look worst then just having it show up in the golem's hands.

Seems to be best animated model in the game so far :) .
Did you wired it all by yourself , is the skeleton anmiation all by you , could you explain how much such animation is time consuming ? Also if you have animation of which are you uncertain , you can always publish them at least at youtube ...

What the hell do you need to polish?!?! those animations are fucking amazing and fluid, I love how it moves its fingers while creating the magic ball

I did all the animations(the movement of the character). I also added bones to the hands so I could attach the rock and animate it.

As for how much time it would take me to redo the rock throwing animation.. it's pretty variable, but I could probably do it within a couple hours give or take. it depends on how much uninterrupted time I have to work on it (very poor multi-tasker with a single track mind) and how many deformation issues I run into.

I'll certainly use youtube for future previews. better quality and lower bandwidth vs a gif.

edit:actually proofread

Well, the rock is still untextured and is a way too spherical. I would also like to make the lichen smoothly transition from the rocks to his body better and redo the normal map to make him look more rocky.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how that turned out myself. what I was imagining is he's attracting and compacting the ambient dust particles in the air to form the rock. just making the rock appear.. kind of didn't sit right with me.

Alright, I'm finished! I ended up redoing the golem's texture because I couldn't fix the seam problems with the old one.. so there's that  and I eventually decided against redoing the rock throwing animation.

new texture:

For some reason, rendering time has increased exponentially.. but once I'm done rendering the animations with the new texture I'll upload it to OGA :!:

Looking nice :) , are you putting the animations into NLA tracks? that will save a lot of time for conversion

is this correct or do they need to be in separate tracks?

Hmm looks good , but with my esthetic sense I can see diffrences, but I cannot tell which one is better ...
So when could we see your model in game ?

I've made some comparison GIFs:
texture.gif

normals.gif

The original texture wasn't bad, I quite liked it myself, but it had some glaring seam issues(specifically around the neck), which I was unable to properly fix without the original rock texture source from yughues and I had no luck finding it in their previous submissions on OGA.

I'm fine with switching back to the old texture if it suite the project better. but we should definitely stick with the new normal map, it's a big improvement over the original one.

paul424 {l Wrote}:So when could we see your model in game ?

I think it's best to leave it in the far more capable hands of Danimal at this point. In the near future, once I get time to sit down and properly learn how to convert models over to ogre3d, I'll start handling that myself ;) .

Well , could you make at least some kind of face , just arrange diffrent type of texture ( brighter/ darker ) , so he ain't soulless pile of rock ....

Maybe glowing eyes would suffice.

i would say thats enough for eyes, i would like to rename it to "Troll", since golems are just mindless rocks and this guy has lots of characters ;)

A pic to show the before and after in the troll model.

It reminds me of "rockbiters" from The Neverending Story (Felsenbeißer in original version), though only as I imagined them when reading the book. The ones from the movie adaptation look more like mountains :-)

To me it looks exactly like discworld trolls, im happy with the new model and hope that little by little we can get rid of all the extremately low poly ones. The game will look pretty different once all creatures have been upgraded :)

:) I'm fine with that. yeah, I think the death animation turned out way too dramatic for a traditional golem type monster.. I can almost hear "Adagio for Strings" while I'm watching it.

To me, it kind of looks like a mixture of the discworld troll and a miniature called "Mountain King".

Alright, I didn't have much time to work on it today, but if time permits, I should be able to finish up the new texture tomorrow. ;)
