Tentacle monster

I think we need more tentacle monsters. What do you think about this cute little thing? (I was inspired by lampreys)

It looks really nasty :), reminds me of the good old tentacle from DK :) which it appears that Blutonium has also made a version of.

You are really good at sketching by the way :), how long did it take to make that? And what tools did you use? Only Gimp?

I painted it in photoshop and I always forget the time when I'm painting, so I'm not really sure how long it took. Maybe 2 hours? I'm not very fast.

Well I think it is pretty fast, as you have done coloring and all :)

I'm not sure maybe it took 3 h. ;)

Here's a screenshot of the high poly tentacle:

Is it made in Blender? Did you use the sculpt tool?

I made it with Sculptris. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=400 Check it out, it's really easy to use.

Brrr, that actually looks pretty good. I'd hate that latching onto my arm... Scary!

How would it attack? By biting repeatedly, or latching onto an enemy and delivering continuous damage until it is killed? Maybe make the affected enemy be unable to take it off himself, so a companion would have to beat it down...

That looks pretty nasty Skorpio - which, for "Dark, Damp, and Dangerous" is a very good thing!

This is a good idea :)

I've painted a texture now and an additional bump map. Instead of a green I chose a yellow-black color scheme which looks more aggressive, but maybe I'll also make an alternative green texture. The yellow areas could perhaps be replaced by the team color.

Nice, although I would like a green color more :)

Here's the green version (yellow = team color). Maybe I should add a bit more yellow. BTW should the tentacle be a big 2x2 monster or a small 1x1? Or we could have both a small and a big version.

Purple/bluish could look cool as well, imo

It is very nice now :) Also I say 1x1, as it is sort of a parasite creature, so it should not be big.

Yeah, I think it should be quite a small creature, even smaller than the kobolds. I can see these "mobbing" the enemy with 4 or 5 of them and surrounding them. If they were very big you wouldn't want to have that many or the screen would become too crowded.

I love the yellow skin, it looks much more agressive indeed. I'd rather run into the green one! And the creatures would be 1x1, because of their parasitic attack. If it was 2x2, it could probably eat small creatures in one go! :)

I am having a hard time imagining how it moves, do you have some animations to show?

I haven't even started to model the low poly version, because I've got no time atm, so there are no animations yet. I'll probably let the creature use its tentacles to drag itself forward, so that it'll look like it's sliding over the ground.

It looks GREAT Skorpio. Really good job.

On size... perhaps there should be more than 1 size - after all, there's more than 1 texture. Small green ones, and the yellow could be some kind of King Tentacle.

Also a name would be nice; tentacle is a bit basic.

Why not make it hop, using the tentacles on the lower part for stability during landing. Like the tentacle from Day of the Tentacle ^_^.

Sounds too cartoony. I like the crawling idea. It sounds much creepier too. Perhaps the base of the tentacle can be made to close up (think open your hand and bringing the tips of your fingers together without bending your fingers) to make a tip that is used to push it forward.

Or it could slither like a snake, maybe stretching out first. That would be really creepy. This fast slithering speedy little freak that then sets itself and bites hard.

Regarding the size then I think that half the size of a kobold would be nice. Then there can also be a few of them attached to a attacked creature without it will look dumb :)

The hoping might, work, that way it can also be fast. But the crawling might look creepier, but will probably not be that fast. But I look forward to see some animation tests :)
