Creature lists and concept art for them

Re: Creature lists and concept art for them

I was wondering if someone would be creating a remake of DK and found this forum :) Well, also found another one called WftO but seems like that won't be libre. Unfortunately I can't offer any talent to the project, but I read about your concept creatures and happen to have an illustration which gathers some of the features you mentioned: golden armor, relief, green glow. Just thought it could help as inspiration :)

Welcome. :) Nice artwork. Did you draw it yourself? These are exact the things we need.

And don't worry about no talent. Even simple ideas and bug reports help the game to get better. And maybe you can use the project to learn new things.

That's from Stargate, no? Still, looks very good.

I think SilviaR was implying this was not his/her own drawing.

Yes definitely strong inspiration from Egyptian mythology and/or Stargate. But not Construct like, as they are not humans.

Sorry for the confusion, that is indeed no drawing of mine (I wish!), I found it on the internet.

It doesn't look very construct :D but I thought the multiple plate thing would work very well with something like the Scout, which needs to have a lot of joints if you follow svenskmand's concept, I should have specified. I did some drawing of my own following that same sketch, might try to do the body if you like it and I can find the time. Please ignore the fact the perspective is off and the shading isn't consistent.

Wow that really cool. Your really good, I hope you want to contribute to the project long-term :) I am also working on a detailed sketch of the scout, but I am not very fast at drawing.

Of improvements I think there should be some of the wavy lines I made around the ear-like things of my design. Also the nose is a bit pointy, I imagined that it looks a little bit like the whole there is skulls of cattle.

But again, you sketch is very nice, and I hope you will stay with us :D

That looks great SilviaR.

A quick note, svenskmand; concept art is not necessarily meant to be a precise match for the already-developed lore. The word "concept" implies that there is artistic freedoms, that the process is development of ideas. Part of it is providing choices for the direction of the art/lore, which includes presenting different styles and interpretations. TL;DR don't be too specific, it's concept art.

Concept art should be used to create the final model. So it should look just as the model should.

And yes we are making concept art, then giving feedback of what we like and what we do not like.

TL;DR: design is all about making stuff, discussing the good and bad parts and then making new stuff based on the discussions.

I think this is just another example of the different usages and definitons of the word "concept". ;) According to my English dictionary it can mean both: the "master art" used to create the final model as well as the draft sketch used to present early ideas (this second option is the one I man if I use the word).

Thanks :) I'll try to make a full-body drawing in the next few days, with the modifications svenskmand pointed. About the things around the head... I simplified them because I don't understand what they are :D I guess those little protuding things are appendages, but what about the circles?

Two people have now submitted to OGA :) We have a rough sketch of the Cleric and 4 much more detailed sketches of the Wisp, the Knight, the Maiden and the Halfling :) They all look very nice indeed :)

This competition might be the best thing that has happened to the content part for OD :), good suggestion Danimal :)

I like the halfling, he fits nicely, with the big fat head.

The halfling is nice, but I felt it needed more suspenders.

This was just something that caught my eye. I loved Overlord, and felt like taking inspiration.
Is this the kind of thing you guys want?

I like the clothing on the other guy much better, he should look noble, in my opinion. Little, fatty and with a big head is nice.

I see what you guys mean. I wasn't too sure on the style you wanted.
For me, everything would be like the slogan - "Dark, Damp and Dangerous." Everything more ugly, gritty and gloomy. However, as requested, I dressed him.

I want to get the style right before I try and do some which don't have art already. Where do you guys want me to go from here?

I think he needs a hat and shoes too. But the cloth should be more formal. He looks more like a woodsman right now, he should look like one of the kings men, so more royal/formal.

Are you sure he should be that formal looking? It's the weak fighter unit, so I would think that it should be more like a militia /ordinary person helping out in fights rather than a royal guard.

Is there a page somewhere describing the characteristics/role of each/any unit? Or, more importantly, the theme of each race? ("Human" is ambiguous as a term.)

Also the formality/nobility you describe, svenskmand, doesn't quite make align with the notion of dungeon building?

I agree with oln (weak fighter, "cannon fodder"). What faction does the halfling belong to?
