Creatures to be used, current state - Help appreciated

Some of you have raised the issue of how little guidance we have regarding the creature models, and its true that we are making do with what we have. So ill appreciate any help you can contribute on what ill expose:

The basic guidelines to creatures are here:

Of those:

Heroes/Humans:
Adventurer- done
Dwarf (advanced blacksmith)- done
Defender - done
can be replaced/added:
Wisp - http://www.blendswap.com/blends/view/67196 (replaced by familiar/small dragon, its an scout weak unit)

The current knigth and dwarfs are so low poly that hurt my eyes, wizard is passable.

Sorry I don't want to appear dumb :), but for those who don't know : AncientBeast has it's models in blender file format !!!! ( just learned that on IRC, from DreadKnight :) ) , and in the link above in most of the folders there are models , though not all complete all high-polly ...

I do like the marauder. It would look good as an advanced spider or a special monster.

I don't like the Granger but the others are ok. They may be a little bit too similar but we could add one of them and maybe use the others as special units. But they look pretty nice.

I dropped on their chat yesterday, using them will be a spiky bussiness; they are holding onto the .blend sources and only giving permission to reconvert the .md5 they provide with the game; at least they provide a iqm converter. so : md5 -> iq -> blend
I dont know what the result of so many conversions will be, gotta try anaways.

They ones i would include would be:
Dretch - as current spider subtitute
Marauder - Kreatur (thing with many arms) subtitute
Tyrant - as an uber creature, the kind you can only have a few ingame (its over 9000 polys!!!)

What is the license for those assets? I don't see why they would not share the .blend files if it's CC By-SA. If it's something else such as CC By-ND, we should refrain from using it.

They are cc-by-sa and some NC (non commercial); they have no real reason nor excuse not to share them, i couldnt convince them to give these models; which they store on some dev computer or i would have sacked their online repository already.

Sounds quite messy :-/
I would advise against using CC by-NC-SA assets as much as possible. The NC clause makes it nonfree for the FSF, and most distributors will consider the same (as was already discussed at a length on another subforum here).

Yeah, unfortunately, NC means no-go for Debian and such AFAIK.

In that case its better we forget this althogeter since they dont clarify what has which license, their models can be used as reference for or own later

Nice to see that quite a few of the Ancient Beast models are planned for OD. In the near future I'll start putting more work on the second set of units so there will be more to choose from.
Will probably also make a showcase page containing different games that have quite a few AB units in them.

hi Dread Knight, i feel very ashamed that i told you i would work on AB models and i havent done barely nothing; i decided to work on room models being a lot more simple and more urgent than new models, not to mention real life demanding it toll on me.
Im happy that Piacenti has taken on completing them, hes an amazing texturer, and ill keep on it when i can in the future.

It got me thinking, shouldnt we get a creature to be the project pet? Just like horny, vile demon, dark mistress and imps were (mainly horned reaper) we could have a cool creature and others for comic relief (Swamp pup?, kobold?)

Nope, this is a very strict license which enforces the production of proprietary content. Basically the model is nonfree, you can't edit it or whatever, but you are allowed to use it as an "incorporated product". This would apply to OD as per these terms:
2.2. The Buyer’s license to Product in this paragraph is strictly limited to Incorporated Product. Any use or republication, including sale or distribution of Product that is not Incorporated Product is strictly prohibited. For illustration, approved distribution or use of Product as Incorporated Product includes, but is not limited to: [...]
(2) as purchased by a game’s creators as part of a game if the Product is contained inside a proprietary format and displays inside the game during play, but not for users to re-package as goods distributed or sold inside a virtual world;


We would have to distribute it under a proprietary format and prevent anyone from being able to access it. :-)

I've rarely seen such a free software-unfriendly license :-D

Its a pity that we cant include a lot of creatures because of our lack of animator (im still useless), maybe we can do a drive in OGA asking for help?

Hey, :)

I'm all for a campaign for new models. Yet, before doing so, I'd like it to be clear that you would be one leading the campaign and taking the main decisions about models and graphic side of the game (like you already do.) People on OGA will look for someone answering their questions, and you might have to decline certain proposals.

On the technical side of things, AFAIK the thread doesn't tell about the average number of tris, the format, the license type needed for texture and models, and there is a link to the "not so final list of factions" and maybe this should be updated, made clearer what is to be done?
