Another DK remake project

Postby StefanP.MUC » 26 Feb 2011, 16:57

Do you know this guy?
http://www.youtube.com/user/DrMaS2010

He develops some DK remake in Delphi. But it seems as it is closed source and only uses the original DK graphics.
On his Youtube page is also a download link to his game.

Maybe you should try to contact him and make him aware of OD. Maybe he can share some knowledge, content and/or ideas.

If you already know of this, then ignore this post. ;)

Edit: and another one:

edit2: yet anotehr one (look in the middle of his uploads)

edit3: And WFTO seems to get a lot of prgress, too, they seem to have a new engine and it looks good:

The problem with all these remakes is that they are more or less directly copying content from the original games, and even though they look promising they will surely be closed down by EA or who ever owns the IP today. Our game is unique and very different, which is why it will survive. But yes it would be very nice if some of these people would join us :P We have actually talked to the War For The Overworld guys, but they did not seem to be too keen on joining, and they did not really like that our game is so different.

I do not know if they have reconsidered, but only a few ended up contributing anything here, even though some of them was positive about the change.

All these projects only use the graphical content of the original games, but the engines are rewritten by hand. But I agree with you, I also don't really think one of them can survive. But if you try to get them as early as possible into the "OD boat", then they will be less frustrated and you will be quicker in developing.

I think you should at least contact all these guys once in the style of: "Hi, we are the developers of OD, an OpenSource game in the style of DK1 and DK2. If ou are interested we'd be happy to see you joining out team."

Maybe they only started their own project, because they didn't know of OD, but are willing to join after they know of it. At least all of them seem to be good coders. ;)

Here is the overview, of what active projects currently exists:
http://www.youtube.com/user/DrMaS2010 (Delphi engine)
http://www.youtube.com/user/Saiyayenkee (Java, JMonkeyEngine)
http://www.youtube.com/user/XMan7733 (made with Unity3D)
http://www.youtube.com/user/WarForTheOverworld, http://warfortheoverworld.org/ (C++ engine?)
http://keeper.lubie.org/ (C++, opensource, reverse engineered)

I'm not sure how many of these guys are aware of OD, but it seems that only WFTO is knowing about it.

I was just looking at the website for WFTO and they now use UDK (Unreal Development Kit) the Unreal engine, so there is no way that will be FOSS as the Unreal Engine is proprietary :S On the wiki page it does say free for non-commerical use on the UDK, but it is still a blow to the head FOSS wise :S But as far as I have notice the WFTO community does not really care about FOSS/OSS and being free of any copyright violations :S I wonder why/or if they have not gotten a cease and desist letter yet?

By the way I think this is mainly the reason for their strong comeback :) And I have not even tried MineCraft :S

Ok, then forget about WFTO. ;)

But the others could at least be informed about OD. Even if we only get one of them to give some code snippets or ideas that would be helpful.

You are certainly welcome to let them know about our project but they may want to continue doing their own thing as well. If you post messages to their forums, etc, make sure you are polite and do not try to be too confrontational, there is plenty of room for many of these kinds of games.

I contacted all of them. Two of them alread replied. Here are their answers:

DrMaS2010 stopped working on his project (because of design problems, he had to rewrite from scratch, but he didn't want to). He only writes russian (had to use google translator to read his answer). But he likes our project and is happy that there is active development going on.

The maker of KeeperFX prefers to work on his project, because it's already playable and even stable. He wishes us good luck and is happy to see this project up and alive. Since his KeeperFX is also OpenSource he agreed on a possible sharing of ideas and code with the OD team. So, if you think he could be a good supporter someone "official" of the OD team should try to contact him and discuss with him what ways there are to share knowledge, code and ideas.
He also pointed me to another OpenSource Project he started long ago:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/unded/
It's a level editor for Dungeon Keeper. Maybe parts of it can be used or modified for OD.
Another opensource DK editor is there: http://sourceforge.net/projects/adikted/ (I know, OD will be combining game and editor, but maybe it's still useful)

edit: by the way, there'S the code repository for KeeperFX: http://code.google.com/p/keeperfx/

Excellent work blablub. The map editor code probably won't be of any use since our entire level design is different from the original DK series but some of the other code could be useful.

I'm completely focused on making it work on the xbox 360 right now, but I won't rule out a PC version in the far off future :L
