density maps in Ogre

Has somebody here successfully implemented grass rendering with density maps in Ogre3d? I want to add grass to my maps, but placing each separate mesh on the map is a big mess.

Not sure whether this is what you need, but StuntRally has a lot of grass on their tracks.

Got a similar reply in Ogre forums. I will take a look at paged geometry, but was trying to find a simpler solution first.
