Mech Game - Demo Map for new Build – codename “Metallblech”

Forget the soldier I want to pilot that tank!
On a side note the setting of the loading screen looks far more futuristic then the current units are.

TheAncientGoat: You can't clarify on behalf of cronos. He's the artist. Only he can say what is and isn't original in his work.

Cronos: is this all your work? What license, if any, are you using?

Which is why I want clarification on where this art comes from. There is inconsistency in style.

It is illegal to take artwork from non-FOSS projects.

It's a bit bizarre that you are refusing to state whether you are the author of this art, cronos, or - if not - where you get it from.

I am the author – I have been working for the last 10 years professionally in the games industry and the models don't have all the same age. Hence they look a bit different and have been originally designed for different platforms, and for prototypes that I did .. and some juts for fun .. This is my company page http://maxstudios.de/ and my linked in network page http://de.linkedin.com/pub/gregor-h-max-koch/1/216/991

Thanks for clearing that up! Sure you don't want to release the models under a CC license?

Hello Julius,

For now I like to keep them exclusive until this game is finished after that possibly.

Its going to be a mech combat game, and then possibly a RTS. Atm,we only have the art assets, the beginnings of a map, but no scripts. We should have those in not too long from now though, if things go well :)

Looks good. Thanks for clarifying that you made/own the art. I hope I wasn't rude about it. It is important to know - not everybody understands copyright / ownership.

Why "metallblech"? It's not exactly an easy thing to say in english and doesn't sound great. Blech is similar to belch, among other things.

I picked this working title because it is an interesting combination of letters and it is a German word. Look at the following listing for an explanation of the adaptation from similar names:

Battletech
Battle Mech
Metallblech ==> in English ==> sheet metal

Ok, that makes it sound better, given context. :)

This is the sky box texture for the demo that looks a bit like the one form the illustration.

This is the first in game test of the new sky box and the landscape textures with layer blending.

Pretty nice, didn't know Syntensity supported terrain rendering. Is it based on a height map?

Julius: There's a heighmap brush tool that you can use to make large terrains, but I don't think we have direct image heightmap to syntensity terrain conversion at the moment, although it has been spoken about before

Ahh ok, so it's what has been in Sauerbraten for a long time already?

To be perfectly honest I am a bit unsure if the CUBE2 engine really is the right one for a mech game... but I would love to be proven wrong ;)

I would scale down the normal maps and the spec map on the terrain. It looks too "small scale" right now for a mech game. But I guess if you could implement the effect that far away hills get a little bit more foggy and of blueish color (there is a name for that but I can remember it now) than that would already help greatly with the lacking sense of size.

Otherwise it looks pretty cool though!

Julius: The terrain normal map gives me the right sense of scale, imo. The spec map can be toned down though, I agree, and fog would be nice (it's easy to set if I remember correctly, I'd rather we have a white/grayish fog than a blue one though, as the skybox is pinkish and I'm not sure if blue would fit)

Having scaled mapmodels of trees + roads and stuff will also go a long way in setting scale
