vBulletin is non-free, so it's not an option here.

When Flarum Beta8 comes out in the near future, I will put up a test installation. It's very lightweight on server resources and works great on mobile devices, however it requires javascript.

Edit: Still has some issues but it is up at https://community.freegamedev.net

Just as a heads-up the bug mentioned above has been fixed but the new Flarum Beta8.1. So for now the system is somewhat operational and I will slowly continue working on it. However the general layout is there and you can have a look at it (registrations are disabled for now though). If you click on the "tags" page it gives you a more classical forum view that I have made make the default view for now.

In theory there is also a phpBB import script for Flarum, but unless one of the current tech-admins of this forum can clean up, prepare and send me the database of this forum (will be lots of work) there isn't anything I can do about it. However a new start to get rid of some of the cruft (while keeping the old forums available read only) is probably not a bad idea anyways.

I guess I'll postpone the forum changes a bit for now and focus on other new software. Ultimately I am hoping that in a few months the fully remade and responsive phpBB theme will be out and than that would be a good time to reinstall a phpBB board. I like that phpBB works better without Javascript (the new theme likely as well) and that it has XMPP notification support.

Flarum8 is nice, but still a bit buggy, which I why I removed it again for now. I also understood that many people here didn't like the Javascript only nature of it.

Ideally there was a Activitypub compatible forum software or a nicer forum view for the group boards in the Hubzilla :(

Someone is looking into ActivityPub support for Flarum:

Anyone able to help?
Edit: Repository here now: https://github.com/squeevee/flarum-ext-feddle

Might be an interesting way to participate in a JavaScript forum through an external non-javascript but ActivityPub enabled service...

Might be another option.

Sadly we are still in the same situation more or less.

The only really interesting option I see right now is Lemmy: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy
It is a Reddit like message board, but it is making great progress with ActivityPub based federation support (full Fediverse integration is planned for the future):
https://dev.lemmy.ml/post/32899

Edit: federation progress can be followed here: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/647

Edit2: so far it has no no-Javascript fallback and also does not allow search engines to index it. Which is IMHO a big drawback for a forum type of software. Lets see how it develops, but for now I think it is probably not suitable for us :(

https://github.com/IronOxidizer/lemmy-lite

JSless (but still experimental) alternative frontend for Lemmy

Massive improvement in Lemmy to render pages without Javascript. For interacting you would still need to use an alternative frontend, but at least the page is browseable without Javascript and this should also help with search engines:
https://dev.lemmy.ml/post/40571

You can try these changes here: https://test.lemmy.ml/

Cross Lemmy federation is also making progress, but it is not yet available in an official release.

Lemmy 0.8.0 with ActivityPub federation is out. I am currently quite busy with work, so it will take a while before I can set up a test instance, but it looks very promising.

Another federated forum alternative I just now came across is this: https://sr.ht/~vpzom/lotide/

Edit: nice new PR page: https://join.lemmy.ml/

Lemmy is now officially federating and the upcoming 0.9 should be quite stable. For now I made a community for us on the main instance here: https://lemmy.ml/c/opensourcegames
