Aren't you all tired of writing one sentence in a post, sometimes one need to post a short message and don't know which topic pin it up to . Can we have a shoutbox , at least for the OD forum , please please ? I saw scripts doing this for this forum engine ...

Consider using a tribune* compatible module like https://drupal.org/project/tribune

*: this is kind of shoutbox standard protocol, used by many website (examples: http://www.lgdb.org/tribune http://linuxfr.org/board http://dax.sveetch.net/tribune/ http://devnewton.bci.im/home/?q=chat ...). It is accessible through web interface or desktop clients (http://hules.free.fr/wmcoincoin/shots.html http://code.google.com/p/quteqoin/ ...).

These are the factors that I look at before I consider agreeing to FGD phpBB feature additions:
1. Extreme ease of implementation of the feature without breaking "ease" of upgrading phpBB
2. Extreme usefulness to the productivity of all project forums.

I recommend using IRC - http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=opendungeons

IRC is good for immediate chat with few people. What paul424 and I imagine is more a long term asynchronous threaded short message conversation.

I'm with Qubodup. I don't see the need that justifies the effort.

If it's a comment not worth starting a thread or contributing to an existing thread, but you can't be bothered logging in to IRC to say it, then it's probably not got a lot of value.

Problem with IRC is that you can leave a message, but it will often be lost because of lack of history (most people does not stay connected 24h/24).

IRC is for real time ONLINE COMMUNICATION when there are MOST of the TEAM. On our channel usually there is NONE.

FORUM/TOPICS are for discussing and documenting a part of the game devel process relevant to ONE thing ( like art / code / future etc.) especially for people which are external : they are new and maybe they wanna join , or maybe they wanna learn .

So suppose someone wants to learn about particular engine solutions in your game , but he stumbles upon something like : " Can you do XYZ before ZYX ? " " Haven't the WXY done that ? " " No I mean XYZ not XYY " "Ohh, sorry, I cannot I 'm sick " "WXY : I can easily make XYZ from XYY, onlty if XYX was avalaible " .... etc. etc. etc.

Maybe that new person, or team members would find that trashy or just NOT A useful INFO ?

Or maybe it could be a separate forum thread?!

Such useful info/questions is surely deserving of its own thread. That way it can be searched. That way it appears in an indexed place that is easy to browse and has meaningful history.

Or you could have some shoutbox toy because some people think it looks nifty, and have 10 different ways to contact everybody and never be able to find that piece of information that was apparently so useful....

Sorry for unborowwing this thread ;
What about the shoutbox again, our OD forum is getting littered by short messages at topics they surely don't belong to. Some of them are like short notifies : like Done [ merging ] . For sure they would suit shoutbox ...
What does the "Elder and Wiser" do say ? Are there any modules for that which would be easy enough for you to handle ? Could you describe what drawback you would experience if you would have to maintain one ?

I read the OD forum regularly. I have seen no such 'litter' and few short messages.

I don't know if the feature is that useful or has that many users wanting it. As a user I don't feel the need for such a feature, most messages I've seen deserve to be registered in the forum and be available for search/consulting, specially given how shoutboxes work.

I don't mind a vote though, that way we could see if users feel the need for a shoutbox and/or prefer it to an IRC chat.

Aw, easy boy. Are you really tagging me as a spammer here? :(

For someone clearly lacking discipline on code, you should go more lightly on how you tell others behaviour.
